Zahra Jamshed: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Positive attitude, hard work, perseverance - all of that coupled with

not taking shit too seriously!

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I'm Pakistan-born, Hong Kong-raised, and in love with the Great

White North. I have way too much energy which means that I’m

constantly teetering on the edge of amusing to annoying, and I can

only really make sense of my thoughts when they’re laid out in

writing. I have workaholic tendencies - I need to be busy all the

time, and even though I’ll be complaining about how tired it makes

me, I secretly love it with a passion.

Why do you do what you do?

Because the creative industry is a source of daily inspiration. When

you’re part of this world you are constantly surrounded by people

who have amazing out-of-the-box-thinking minds, and their

presence alone pushes you to challenge yourself and break barriers

you never even knew existed.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I’ve been in love with the creative world for as long as I can

remember. In Elementary School, I was always getting in shit with

teachers for drawing on their tables, and my Math teachers used to

hate me because I wrote out all my calculations graffiti-style. One

particular event that stands out for me comes a little later in life,

when I started a publication at University with my two friends,

Cherie and Tamara, known as Muse Magazine. At that time Queen’s

didn’t have a creative publication quite like it, and not only was it

received enthusiastically, but it was treated with such love and care

by everyone who took part. It was my first time seeing the creative

world bring people together in a way I couldn’t have imagined.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Even though I’ve loved this world since I was a kid, there’s

definitely been times where doubt has taken over and I’ve been

convinced that I would be better off as an observer, not a participant.

I went through a rut right a few years ago and I was on the verge of

walking away from it for good. I had a conversation with a really

important friend who unknowingly convinced me not to, and I

ended up starting whatthefhk soon after that. Even now, I don’t

think they know they were the source of something so important to

me.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I’m incredibly lucky because I have family that are like friends and

friends that are like family - I’m always surrounded by people who

fuel the fire whenever I feel like I’m burning out. My grandma,

Ammijan, passed away almost two years ago, and to this day she is

still one of my biggest inspirations. Despite all the hard things she

endured throughout her life, she would only talk about the good, and

with that came a positive attitude that was so incredibly contagious.

I spend every day trying to be half the person she was.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

When things start going your way, it’s easy to get caught up in your

successes that your shit is blown away when you trip up and fall -

you don’t see the tough times coming so you’re not prepared to

handle them. I’ve learned this the hard way, but it’s made me

conscious about counting my blessings and learning to stay levelheaded.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

You’ll have to wait and see

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

A good friend once told me “sleep is not the cousin of death,

complacency is.” Hard work only reaps results when its coupled

with perseverance, so don’t settle for anything and never become

content with your accomplishments. Ask more questions, look for

better answers, and keep your mind hungry every step of the way.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

People are awesome - spend time with the good ones and extra time

with the great ones!
