Zac Jackson: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Truth in all parts of what you love to do.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

A 25 year old trying to “make it” like everybody else, doing what I love. A son, a brother, a friend, a fiancée, (yes I’m engaged)

Why do you do what you do?

I love working with different people. You get a refreshing view on life when you lest expect it. And I love showing and sharing my work with my clients friends and family, (and anyone else who’s interested)

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

This is a long story, so I’ll consolidate. I always had an interest in photography, starting when I played around with my parents old film camera. Once I was able to afford my own camera, I saved up to buy my own digital camera, (which I think was a canon point and shoot). After that I bought a Canon 7D and had the opportunity to start shooting my friends DJ’ing at a nightclub. The Nightclub started paying me to shoot the nights and edit and post the photos. After I learned how to really use the camera and edit photos, I was pretty hooked. I had found a way for me to work with some really cool people and share my work with all of them.

I’ve obviously refined the process and extended my services and clients, but still love every second of it.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing I’ve had to overcome was the initial lifestyle of shooting in nightclubs and live events. The hours and lifestyle can get crazy and you need to know where to draw the line between work and play. After I started building my portfolio with additional clients outside the nightlife industry, I realized where that line was pretty quick.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Yes, my parents. I mean I’ve had my fair share of 9-5’s, (the ones no one likes) but since I’ve decided to pursue photography as my career, my parents have been behind me the whole way, (as well as my super hard working fiancée). And a hand full of my best friends, (you know who you are). I don’t know of anyone I’ve personally inspired, (maybe one day) but that would be a pretty great feeling.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Mistakes happen all the time, (sometimes daily) you obviously learn and move on. But Probably the biggest mistake in this industry is not being prepared, ie, with your clients, gear, file handling, contracts, etc. I’ve learned you can only be prepared for what you know. The rest is adaptation.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Lots of shoots coming up, (summer is always the busiest). Looking forward to Digital Dreams Festival in Toronto. Always looking to meet new people make new connections. Networking. It’s key.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Be yourself. Work smart, play hard. You only have one life, make it yours. Oh and TRAVEL! It’s amazing and will change your life.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Thanks to anyone who has taken the time to read this far, haha. If you feel like collaborating feel free to give me a shout!
