Yonnie: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Inspiration, passion and strength…I think of my parents. We argue all the time but they’re always there for me and have always taught me to never give up. They’ve taught me this lesson many times through tough love and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I’m Yonnie. I’m the guy trying to make something of himself from the nation’s capital. I’m the guy who will do anything for family. I’m the guy looking to live a better life than the average joe by doing what I love. I’m the kinda guy who won’t stop until I reach my goal.

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do cause it’s fun and makes me happy. It makes others happy and spreads nothing but good vibes and I love seeing others close to me nothing but happy. It’s a refreshing feeling to know that you’ve had an impact on someone’s emotions in a positive way. “Spread love is the Brooklyn way”.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I chose to take Photography seriously at the beginning of this year (September 2013) by going to school for it. I’ve always taken photos prior to this for fun. Best part is, I was never bought a camera, I always took my parents’ camera and took random photos. I remember the day my dad bought an SLR on boxing day a few years back and I took it out for a spin…I was hooked immediately like it was a drug. It always interests me that I can freeze time and preserve a specific moment forever how long I want to. When I take photos, I can’t take one or a few. Most people who know me, know that I take a million photos only to display one or two. I get trigger-happy too easily but it’s all fun because every photo differs from one another.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Toughest thing I had to overcome was deciding to go to college for photography. I always thought I would be a university kinda guy and after 2 years, it just wasn’t for me. I could do it, but I just didn’t enjoy it at all. I would fear the fact that I’d be letting down my parents and facing their disappointment but ultimately it would be my decision as to what I wanna do the rest of my life. ALL my close friends helped me through this, although I will admit it was a dark and rough time. I thank all my friends for helping me get through it and of course my parents for understanding and allowing me to follow the path I chose to take.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

All the time. People inspire me everyday. When I see other artists doing something or close friends achieve something, it inspires me to keep going. I have SO much respect for people who continuously work on their craft. It’s refreshing to see familiar faces going after their own dream and just straight up working hard to get to wherever they want to be.

I’ve been told that I’ve inspired people or that I have a strong influence on someone. I’m truly grateful for comments like that, but in my mind I still think I’m just the same old kid from Ottawa who loves his cartoons. To influence someone or inspire someone in a positive way is truly a blessing.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

One mistake I’ve made is to lose complete contact with close friends and family cause I was too focused on my work. It’s great to have passion for work and motivation but you always gotta have your family and friends there. You just gotta find the balance. It was wrong of me. I learned from by seeing them when I can and just trying to balance it out more. You don’t wanna move through life too fast and miss all the fun and forget to enjoy the little things.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

RAW – SPECTRUM (May 29) BE THERE. Haha I’ll be doing my first art showcase at this show. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and I hope that all my close friends and family and even new people can come through and see what I’ve been working on. After that, I have no idea to be honest. I’ve just been taking it day by day and putting all I’ve got into this exhibition.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Surround yourself with people who have nothing but good vibes and are REAL. Don’t waste time over toxic people and just eliminate them. Wasted time is worse than wasted money. Have a goal or a dream, a dream so big that you think it’s impossible or scares the hell outta you. Now take that goal or dream and go after it. Don’t stop, keep chasing, slow down if you have to but never stop. Never do it for the paper. Money comes and goes and as soon as you learn that lesson life will be a lot less stressful. Do what makes you happy, do something that makes yourself happy instead of trying to please others. Bottom line is, if you’re going after a dream or goal, all it really comes down to is: how bad do you want it?

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Dream big, do big. That simple.
