Uriel Espinoza: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

My Friends

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

That one dude that happens to make friends with the strangest of people and knows how to make everyone smile and loves exploring.

Why do you do what you do?

Because I can. There’s nobody else that can do what I do how I do it, and if I don’t, nobody will. (also because it’s a fuck ton of fun)

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

To be honest I’ve only shot for a little over a year but I didn’t realize how much happier I’d be living my life this way. My brother originally convinced (read: forced) me to sell my paintball gear and buy a camera. I gave it and ended up liking it a bit. Didn’t think I’d take it anywhere until I started shooting with one of my biggest inspirations. I won’t name names but his motto on instagram is “I used to live a casual life like you” (The Chariot – Not).

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

At first I was afraid ( I was petrified ) of heights. I still am, but I was then, too. I think the first rooftop I ever got on was in San Francisco. Climbing the fire escape ladder left my hands drenched in sweat and my teeth hurt over how much my jaw was clenched. Doing it repeatedly makes it much easier. I’m still uneasy being on the edge but I’m happy on rooftops.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Ah. This is a tough question mostly because I have a lot of people to thank for the encouragement along the way and I don’t want to forget anyone. I’d have to start with my brother because he’s the one who convinced me to pick up photography. I think my first real experience with any sort of group of photographers came from my friends in San Diego. I love them. They have such a creative atmosphere around them that anytime I hang with them I’m hit with inspiration for a shoot or a trip.

There’s one person specifically who works far too much than anyone naturally should, is busier than anyone should naturally be, and is still happier than anyone else I know. I don’t think anyone understands the impact some people have had on me, but I met him at a very vulnerable time in my life.
Also, if you ever have the chance to read The Alchemist, do it. That book was the catalyst to me changing my life.
Last but definitely not least, my friends in San Francisco have become my photo fam. I have Flaskmob to thank for all that and honestly all of my photo friends are friends for life.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I think my only regret is not diving into this as much as I could’ve when I first started. What really stalled my progress initially was the fact that I felt defeated by the lack of ability to travel so I didn’t go out of my way to explore or learn or progress. I just know now that I don’t really have time to waste sleeping or moping or being still.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

The main reason I wanted to start shooting was because of a project I had in mind involving my favorite place in the world. I have a collab coming up within the next few months with a ton of talented photographers/make up artists/stylists/models that I’m excited to make come to life. I also have to find a way to hit the east coast hard.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Be passionate about what you do. If you have to do something, be the best at it. Don’t half ass anything. Don’t pass up opportunities presented to you. Everything leads to an adventure. Life is what you make of it. People think sometimes that life is against them. Life doesn’t care about you. It’s got its highs and its lows regardless of what you think. It’s up to you to ride those waves.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Never stop exploring and don’t forget to smile.
