Todd Spoth: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

3 essentials to a full & happy life.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

Photographer, musician and overall creative from Houston, Texas.

Why do you do what you do?

Because I like being my own boss and making a living doing something I truly enjoy. The unpredictability of it keeps it fresh and entertaining. I am not cut out for the 9 to 5 cubicle grind.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I figured out that I wanted to be creative for a living shortly before graduating and starting law school. It was too late to change my degree plan, but I was floored after a late-night chat with my stepfather. He told me to do something I loved no matter what, so I took his advice and never looked back.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

I never went to school for photography, in fact the only class I ever failed was the only photography class I have ever taken. I wish I would have majored in business, but I did not. It’s a constant source of stress to be a small business owner in today’s economy, especially without any formal training. Each year it gets better and better. Being completely self-taught in photography is one thing, but learning how to run a business and wearing 100 different hats is a pretty tough thing to overcome on your own.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I am completely self-taught, however everything I have learned can be traced back to a small group of amazing mentors, a handful of workshops and internships that showed me the way and several years of assisting some of the industry’s best photographers.  Now that I’m the one hiring assistants and getting emails from younger photographers, I try to do my best to be open with anyone willing to hear what I have to say in hopes that maybe I can inspire others in the future.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Make sure that all parties involved understand and are clear on the expectations of a project before proceeding. This applies to both formal and informal situations. Relationships, both business and personal, can deteriorate unnecessarily if parties are not on the same page.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

This year I am focusing on doing my first big marketing campaign, sending out proper promos, having proper meetings in NY & LA, etc. Hopefully we can continue the growth.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Slow down.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Hire me and/or Follow me
