Stefanie Neves: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Creativity, Dedication and Hard Work.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I’m a 20 year old portrait photographer working towards making my passion, my lifetime career.

Why do you do what you do?

Take photos mostly- currently trying to hone my skills as a film photographer, so I try not to shoot digitally-, I watch a lot of movies and every here and there I bake.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

My family is quite the believer in photographing- albeit formal family photos or funny snapshots at dinners- so I’ve been surrounded by photography my whole life. When it came down to deciding what I wanted to do post-secondary, I decided that I didn’t want to sit in boring lectures all day and went out on a limb and decided to follow what I felt/feel passionate about. Haven’t had a reason to think otherwise, since.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

In a digital age where photography is so accessible to everyone- vis a vi taking photos on professional cameras that everyone now has, shooting with your smartphones etc- it’s difficult to create something new when everyone has seen it all before. It’s important to constantly stay motivated and inspired and always push yourself to do something new; there are a lot of people in my life who are always pushing me to be better than before: my professors, peers, friends etc.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

There’s an essence of photography that captures and is truthful, a lot more in photos than something like video- in motion, you capture something but just like that it’s gone. I suppose no one person has directly inspired me to become a photographer, more so than the actual allure of photography has itself.

I got an email the other day from a girl in high school working a photography project where you have to “shoot in the style of”. She chose me and asked me about some technical stuff and I don’t think I’ve ever been so flattered. I hope to inspire people and get more emails like that one day.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

When just starting I found myself comparing my work to that of other people’s. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is not to do that- focus on what you’re doing, not what other people are. Always work on bettering yourself, not lingering on how much better someone is than you.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’ll be in NYC for the summer interning, so currently putting all of that together. I’m more than excited to see what that brings!

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Always be humble and work hard. Good things come to those who hustle, not those who wait.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

It’s cheesy, but do what you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
