Sophia Danai: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

These words are motivating! I love the fact that in order to utilize and exercise one, you need the other. To be inspired you need passion, and to execute your passion you need strength and perseverance.  Personally, these words are a way of life and a reminder of how I want to approach everything I do.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am a lover, I lose my temper quickly but am quick to apologize and to forgive. I find peace near the sea and in the sun. I believe in God and always strive to live with purpose.  I believe in family first, and then work. I want to have money and nice things, but I do not want them to have me. I think fundamentally people are good, and most just need a second, third or fourth chance. Making music and writing make me feel unique, and like the best version of myself. To me, when you ask someone who they are, it is so much more than what they do, where they've been and what they have. I think it's important to remember you are not defined by any one thing in your life, and just you, simply you, are enough. So much in fact - You are a divine being and that's rad.

Why do you do what you do?

Music is therapy for me, and when I truly connect with an audience there is nothing else like it in the world. It is spiritual, healing, and fulfilling. I am grateful to be a part of these moments.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I knew since I was little I wanted to be a performer and entertainer, but I was led to pursue music when I was going through a really shitty breakup and wrote a collection of songs with an old guitar I had. I was in a theatre company at the time and decided to leave and record my first demo in 2006. ( which will never be heard ) lol.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing I've had to overcome, and continue to overcome, is my own self doubt and insecurity. When you are not sure in yourself, and your art, it is easy to allow other people to direct you in a way that does not align with your original purpose; which for me, is to write songs that are genuine, and hopefully soul stirring for the listener.  I am especially excited about my next project, which will be released Spring 2015, because it is being made independently, and I feel like it is a complete evolution of anything I've done before.  God, time, experience, loved ones and my core group of band mates have gotten me through all the indecisiveness and lame shit. I am lucky to be surrounded by people who empower me.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I am constantly inspired by my friends, and creative partners. I have a very small core group of people in my life, and we all take care of each other. I feel like that is the only way I would be able to survive trying to make a living out of my art. It is so scary putting your work out there, which you've slaved over, and put everything into. You need trusted people to ground you, and remind you of who you are and what's important. Also, babies are the most inspiring beings. Having a bad day? If you can, hang out with a baby, they'll remind you what's up.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

One? This answer would be in essay format if I went into detail. Mistakes happen every day and make you who you are, for better or for worse. I think learning to forgive yourself is the key. Unfortunately I learn things the hard way, and it usually takes me a couple times before I don't do whatever it was again. My parents always tried to help me, but I was so damn stubborn. When I have my mind set on something I need to have it, which can be great, or very bad.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I'm currently working on my next project, set to be released Spring of 2015. I'm collaborating with amazing artists and producers to bring everything together: photos, music videos, album art ect. I feel like since the music is very true to me, I've attracted the right people to help illuminate the vision for this collection of songs. My goal is to experiment more with my live show, and continue to create a well rounded performance. Also, find balance in general, always looking for balance.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

"The cure for anything is saltwater: sweat, tears or the sea." -isak dinesen

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Love life and it will love you back.
