Sonia Zarei: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Positivity, acceptance and forgiveness. When you’re positive, you gain inspiration. When you accept your situation and continue to work hard, you gain passion. When you forgive yourself and others, you gain strength.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I’m Sonia, a little lion that floats around 97Hz.

Why do you do what you do?

I decided to pursue music because it’s the only thing that really made sense. Playing music is liberating, it’s intimate, it takes a lot of passion and dedication and I feel so rewarded with everything I do involving music. I couldn’t see myself being truly happy and blessed doing anything else.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I was studying Political Science at Ryerson University and I was failing. I couldn’t push myself to study or listen to what I was being taught; my mind was always wandering somewhere else. I felt stuck in a field I didn’t want to pursue. That’s when I knew I really wanted to do music. I ended up staying at Ryerson for half a semester, finished my exams, passed my courses and left.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing by far that I’ve had to do is learn to hear yourself sing and play in an extremely loud venue where everybody is eating and talking. At that point you can either ask the sound guy to turn you up, which he doesn’t like doing, or you just trust yourself and play.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

The best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten was “every time you sing, sing loud and never let anybody take your voice away from you”. That stuck with me and a lot of times when I’m feeling uninspired it helps bring me back up. I hope I’ve inspired people with my music, my heart and my will to be weird.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I think the biggest mistake I’ve made was being afraid of myself. I just turned 19, so for the past year I’ve been surrounding myself and been working with artists that are older and more experienced than me which can sometimes be intimidating, so I automatically looked down on myself and thought that I sucked. What I learnt from that was just learning to change my mindset, instead of looking down on myself I learned to take advantage of the situation as an opportunity to learn something new from them whether it’s tips on my guitar playing, or tips on vocals, and at the end of the day they wouldn’t be working with me if they didn’t think I was good enough. That has helped shape me to where I am right now, and I thank every single experience and person I’ve worked with.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’m currently working on 2 major projects that I’m really excited about. I’m independently working on my solo EP entitled “Empty-Minded” where I’m recording, producing and writing. I’m working on a conscious rap, RnB, tribal collaboration EP with rapper and beat-maker Attaba Sun aka Anthony Yapi, where we’re recording, producing, writing, making beats and singing.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Don’t wait for anybody to complete you.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Thank you!
