Seun Gun: Interview

\\

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

I think of the movement behind the Harlem Renaissance, the free-spirit of Jazz not bound by any theoretical laws of music. I think of Basquiat and of innovators in different disciplines who expressed themselves with no concern for the criticism of others. That to me is true inspiration, passion, & strength.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

A poet & visual artist with aims to move people with my work.

Why do you do what you do?

I do this because through photography I am whole. As I continue to convey my feelings through visuals and words and as the viewer understands the reasoning for my choices, that connectivity between myself and my audience regardless of distance is a gift I treasure.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I’ve actually always wanted to be in front of the camera but when I started shooting with my girlfriend, (a fellow photographer) I fell in love with the merger of the technical and the creative sides of photography.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

As Lupe Fiasco said years ago in a song, “ my greatest enemy is my inner me”. That’s been the toughest thing for me, not being too tough on myself for I am my own greatest critic. My girlfriend has been the best and has really helped to remind me to relax more.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Fellow creative peers, Joshua Kissi & Travis Gumbs founders of the creative agency (Street Etiquette) inspired me to begin my own. As for me, I’ve gotten emails and messages from novice photographers thanking me for inspiring them. Reading how I’ve already inspired people at this stage in my career motivates me further to be a better role model.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Trying to do too much at once and not sometimes slowing down to enjoy the ride.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I just finished a photo shoot with Tim Hortons

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Just live your life and pursue your dreams. It’s better to know that you at least tried than to live a life of “what if’s”

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Be kind, be humble, listen, ask for help, read, mentor, and aspire to inspire.
