Sandra Bunga: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

First words that come to mind when I hear inspiration, passion and strength to my surprise is pain and triumph. I think a lot of things that have inspired me have come from the darkest moments in my life in which I have come a long way to surpassing and triumphing most of them. I feel as though that pain in any shape or form can be used towards positively to gain strength to grow into the individuals we’ve always dreamed to be. There comes the passion which eventually pays off  in the end which we’ve seen countless examples, non?

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am just a mere part of God’s plan, that’s in the works to fulfill my purpose in life. I’m me and only me, and aspire to be no one else but a better version of myself every day.

Why do you do what you do?

Because I’ve been told I couldn’t. What better way to shut someone up by succeeding, n’est pas? Haha that and the fact that I can’t see myself doing anything else but music.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I did give up on the dream, my parents wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer or whatever. But in college I met so many different musicians and people in bands who opened my eyes to the Woodstock era and just so much more. But, I was working at one of my jobs and I met my coworker Justin Rochon who was into music and we became good friends, and I told him I sang and we talked and I sent him a rough copy of a song I recorded with Topher Bennet (friend/met in college). He liked my voice and then referred me to speak to Bryan Ruckstuhl producer and owner of Studio169. And then from there the rest kind of took place in recording of all the songs for self titled EP. My first ever! I still laugh, because 2 years ago I never would of thought that I’d actually pursue it.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Toughest thing to overcome was my fear, my fear in change. Because I knew I wouldn’t want to settle anymore and that I would want to keep going for music.  But change comes new responsibilities and obligations and new venues, opportunities and paths opening or closing, I didn’t think things would change but things have drastically changed and at a point I was just merely terrified to even perform. But Bryan Ruckstuhl sat me down and basically said how much he believed in me and he was very realistic and positive and always made me feel at ease and made me realize I was giving way too much significance to my doubt and fears and that I needed to focus and stay on a narrow and straight path and visualize what I want and go for it. Bryan as well as my brother, Cristiano who is my right arm and my friend Jarine who is my left arm. They continue to help me and I stay grounded because of them.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I was 9 years old and my parents were asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I said “ a Madonna”. I thought it was a job title or some sort of occupation, that’s how BIG Madonna was and still is to me. That’s when I knew, music was my calling I guess.

I performed at  Umi’s café in Ottawa and a women came up to me after I performed my song “Yours” which is based around domestic violence and cycle of violence. Anyways she comes up to me tears in her eyes and she said “You put everything I’ve felt for my ex husband of 15 years in a  song. Thank You, now I know I can go on knowing that it’s not stupid that I feel badly for him. No one is born evil.” I’m such a big baby, I started to cry. She was telling me how the song was what she needed to know that it’s okay to love the people who have hurt us, but not to carry the hurt or we become just the same. I was not expecting that at all.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Basically focusing on me and myself only. That was a huge wrench, I was concerned about getting bands, and the whole works as well as trying to do extravagant things and spending money on things that weren’t necessary, set me back which made me push back on a lot of things. I’m still learning, however I’ve overall learned that it’s okay to be selfish. I can’t help others if I can’t even help myself.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I have lot of projects coming up, always in the studio recording and collaborating with Ottawa’s finest musicians and singers/rappers/spoken word poets etc.. As well thinking of making some merchandise as well. My plans are to keep going. I can never foresee what has yet to come. I’ll let you be my eyes and look out for me :)

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Nothing in life is guaranteed or should be taken for granted. That’s why you have to fight for your life every day. It’s not enough to simply exist, you have to live life.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Love Peace & Music xoxo
