Samara York: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Music, love, confidence

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am a growing and evolving human being, trying to make the most out of life, go after my dreams, and give love back to the world!

Why do you do what you do?

I just can't help it. I can't remember a time when I was not writing or singing. It is a part of my soul and I wouldn't be a happy person without going after what I truly want in life and pursuing my music career, as hard as it is sometimes.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I've been in love with music since I was four or five years old. I think it's because my parents exposed me to so many different genres and artists as a child--we were always listening to music in my house. I took an immediate interest and they supported and encouraged my natural creative streak by enrolling me in programs and classes very young. I think that's how it just kind of worked its way into my heart. It's very emotional for me.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

There are so many challenges in going after a career in music. People are always questioning me, why I'm not in school and why I'm risking so much and working so hard for a potential outcome of nothing. It's hard enough mentally, and then you go into the field working at gigs, festivals, recording, etc., and you often come across difficult situations and sometimes difficult people. You have to be prepared to have your heart broken sometimes, and you need to have a thick skin. No one has helped me more than my family and my amazing band, Jaime Cazes, Tudor Gagea, & Ben Bachner. They encourage me every day, especially during the times when I feel like giving up, to just keep going and keep pushing myself harder. I have a motto that hard work pays off. Hard work in school pays off for a doctor or lawyer, so why shouldn't it pay off in the music industry for a musician?

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My parents inspire me more than anything. While other parents were forcing my peers into financially secure career paths that they absolutely did not want to pursue, my parents pulled me out of my enrollment at university before it begun and told me to screw what other people think and go after my dreams. Who even does that?! They inspire me to be who I am and be proud of it. They taught me that nothing is more important in life than being happy and being the best version of yourself, and that's what I strive to be. As for inspiring others, I like to think that I (hopefully) inspire all of my students (and friends) in some way or another, but one thing that sticks out to me is back when I was directing a choir in high school--I had a male student at the end of the year write me a beautiful card about how I made him a more confident person and changed his life. It really touched my heart. Teaching is so fulfilling, and it is amazing to be able to reach out to others, especially with music.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I make mistakes all the time! One of my biggest problems is not being able to let go of control. I always have to control everything and refuse the help of other people, even my band, and then I tend to bury myself in my own work and get overwhelmed. I'm learning more and more that it's okay to ask for help, and not to over-load myself with too much stress. Literally nothing good comes out of that!

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I just recently released a single called Monster that I have been working on for months with Canadian producer Michael Hanson. Here's a link: Another big project coming up is that my band and I are playing at the Opera House on November 29th. Huge show! Can't wait for that. Down the road, the plans are to go on tour, push my career along... The main thing is just to make a living. I don't care about being famous or being well-known; I just want to support myself and help out my friends and family by doing what I love most.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Don't let other people tell you who you are and what you are capable (or not capable) of. If you don't know yet, it's okay to take time to figure it out. When you do... Go after your goals, work hard, and stay humble.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this, and thank you to Babes & Gents for the interview! All the very best... Samara
