Rona Ocean Ghanbari: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Blind ambition.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

Just some kid trying to learn as much as possible about everything.

Why do you do what you do?

Music has always been the thing that got me through every obstacle in life. Every heartache, every dance break – the horrible times and the amazing times. I don’t really do it for any other reason than it’s second nature to me. Like breathing.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

It’s hard for me to answer this because I feel like I’m in transition. I’m doing multiple things. In terms of music, it’s just always been a thing I wanted to do, whether that meant professionally or on YouTube or just singing to my showerhead. There have been a few key moments where I’ve been offered certain opportunities by friends in the industry, or through shows I’ve been asked to play that really solidified my desire to keep music up even though my time in law school.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The realization that there is always going to be someone better, smarter, quicker, more talented than you are. You can’t be discouraged by being around people who all seem more impressive than you are, you just have to absorb everything you can from them and become better, smarter, quicker and more talented by osmosis. Ditch the ego.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My parents. They have the most insane story and built themselves up form absolutely nothing and are extremely intelligent and hard working. If I can be a fraction as legendary as my parents are then I’ll be satisfied in life.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I spent a long time thinking I had to choose between music and academics. As though I needed to fully commit to one or the other and I couldn’t possibly do both. I have to be honest it is really difficult, but the fact is that when you love something, you must make time for it. It’s all about that balance, and no one can decide how much you put into something other than yourself.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’m going to be recording an EP when I get back to Canada. Actually have some exciting projects on the go, and I’m going to make sure I make time for them despite law school taking up a vast majority of my time.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Be kind.

I think in life there is always this pressure to come off a certain way. To seem strong or unaffected emotionally by other people and not let other break your walls down and get to know you so that you always maintain a certain level of power in any given relationship.

I don’t live my life that. I know a lot of people would look at me and see a softie, and see a little girl who is going to get eaten alive in the big bad world, but I honestly and genuinely believe that I wouldn’t have been as successful in my life if I didn’t genuinely love people and if I wasn’t as smiley or nice. It’s not naiveté – it’s deciding to adopt a view of the world that allows you to see the best in other people no matter what mistakes they’ve made or what circumstances they are in.

In the end, we really aren’t so different.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Stay golden ponyboy
