Rita Carter: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Maama, Africans, Family, The Diaspora, Love

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am a queen! I am a bird.  I need to fly.  I do so, by creating positive, honest music for the people.

Why do you do what you do?

Because it is my duty to use my God-given talent for good

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I knew the first time a young woman approached me after one of my first ever performances, with tears in her eyes, stating that I touched her soul and she related heavily to my lyrics and music.

I was fed up of living and breathing the status quo.  I had to break free.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Separating from my long time partner and manager after giving birth to our son was the hardest thing I had to overcome.

My son helped me persevere and motivated me to focus on my dreams, so I can show him it is possible to get up when you fall and dream big again.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My family.  The world and its present state. History.  Injustice.  Love.

I believe I have inspired people, but it is always a reciprocal inspirational exchange.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Being too nice.  I have to always remember that making music and sharing it can be a business if one desires it to be.  No one will take you seriously if you don't take yourself seriously.  The more serious you are, the more success will follow.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Third album to be released in spring 2015.

Entitled "ALL OF WE", this double album is the end of a trilogy and an ode to Ottawa inspired by the collaborative efforts made with local Ottawa artists .  The first two LPs were called "A Piece of Me" in 2005 and "All of Me" in 2009.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

To all my fellow Ottawa artists and entrepreneurs: SLEEP WELL, DREAM BIG, AND WATCH YOUR STARS ALIGN!!!  Never give up on your dreams.  It's easy to have faith, maintaining it is hard. I prefer the hard way!

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

So much gratitude and love goes out to this city of mine.  I love Ottawa and the people in it.  I do this for my city, my community, my environment.  I do this for my bloodline.

- Much love
