Rebekka Sivertsen: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Life, love and confidence.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am a positive person with a lot of excitement and energy!

Why do you do what you do?

I have always turned to song writing as a way to express my feelings, as I am not that good at talking about them or even thinking about them. I learn a lot about myself from my own lyrics. In my teenage years I would write and record songs about boys and make sure they heard it instead of talking to them about my feelings. Especially if I was upset with them. Looking back at this - it is quite a childish thing to do but it definitely helped me get my anger and frustration out, without having to face it directly. I went to the University of Hertfordshire to study music technology to be able to record my songs the way I heard them in my head although I do prefer working with a producer.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I always wanted to make music and as a child I took every opportunity to perform to an audience. I can't remember a set time I decided this is what I want to do it’s just always been my goal.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

As a kid I was a very confident singer but as a teenager I developed stage fright and I didn't perform as a singer for 6 years. I was too scared to fail and make a fool out of myself and that my own fear would sabotage my voice. I still performed on stage doing theatre and cheerleading but singing my songs felt too personal. It came to a point where I didn't even want to sing with anyone in the same room and I would rather record my songs and the upload the song on the Internet for the world to hear it. When I started working with the producer for my four singles, Jørn Lavoll, I had to sing in the same room as him and slowly I got used to it again. I believe I finally overcame my fear during this last year when I performed on a festival in my home town in Norway and then twice in Switzerland.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My family is very musical and I grew up with all kinds of instruments in my house. This gave me the tools to develop and be creative and I believe this in it self inspired me to keep doing it.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

If anything it would be that I didn't try harder when I was younger. I was always very chilled and maybe believed I would be successful without having to try that hard. Now I understand nothing is going happen by itself and it doesn't matter how good you or your songs are if you're just playing them to yourself in your room.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I am currently making music with producer, songwriter and artist Brian Storme and hopefully we’ll release an EP. I am also working on a personal project with the songs I wrote as a late teen. Although I have not set a date for this to be finished.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Believe in yourself because in your life the most important person is yourself and you should love yourself more than anyone else does. Tell yourself that you are great and you will be because you think it.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

I’m better with cats.
