Phil Vidican: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Inspiration; Humanity. Passion; controlled obsessions. Strength; My Mother.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

A caustic catalyst of an unfortunate environment.

Why do you do what you do?

Because the industry I work in, is not favorable. I wish to do my best to change it from the inside out. The obsessive vanity, discriminatory, classist behavior of the fashion industry is incredibly outdated in my opinion, and I wish to give it a facelift and a different name.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

In middle high, this girl ran it past me that girls like a guy who's well dressed. To me it was pertinent as I had little to no interactions with girls at the time and I would have done anything to get their attention really. I guess it stuck to me with time. I think I was in 8th grade, and I was out shopping there was this deal from Footlocker, it was like 5 t-shirts for 30$ or something like that, I got a few light blue Ts but also a pink one as well. I feel as if that T marked a transaction from conformity to shock effect.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The hardest/toughest thing I had to overcome is conformity itself. Not on a personal level but rather on a social plane. My philosophy of fashion doesn't start nor end at Michael Kors and I feel like my day to day aesthetics get pushed for that quite often. From day one, I would be put on the spot for things I wear and things I wish to wear. To this day I still hear "This is the nicest thing I've seen you wear", along with other backhanded compliments like "I thought your hair was a joke at first, but now I get that it's part of your look". I still don't get my prop where they’re deserved and that’s the hardest part. I had to cheat my way to where I am today.

As for the people who have helped me? My mother, first and far most. Ryan, OD helped me through the rough patches

of my life. I needed help from all corners in the media but I think Eric Lamirande helped me the most in terms

of artistic development but homie's in the West Coast right now. Right now, in Montreal, I've been working alongside Linx Selby, Benoit Brule, Sam Lu & Sean Keough on various projects, each helping me in a different manner.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Early on, I think Kanye West and Pharrell inspired me to become the man I am today. Amongst the thug ass rappers and watered down crap we were hearing on the radio, there was these two guys who made me feel like as if I can be so much more than your everyday convention. Later on, a picture Kanye West had with his entourage, sparked a lot of talk due to one individual, Taz Arnold, for wearing leopard print leggings, at the time, this was nuts and got people speaking. He quickly became an icon of mine for not being afraid to wear whatever the fuck you want and not giving one in the process. Today however, I get inspired by cultures far from and around me as well, there's nothing like humanity to inspire you. As for inspiring someone directly. I may never know really. Sometimes I see my influence on other people, but it barely gets passed to me verbally, so it's all assumed by me at this point.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I've burned bridges with people publically, I assumed the worst of others, I kept to myself for a large portion of time and I scorned people for being below my expectations. I evidentially now know where I went wrong and what I had to do to fix myself in order to better in this world.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I just want to be remembered for something I think I was good at, and not second to someone who doesn't deserve their praise.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Appreciate things for what they are and always assume anyone can help you somehow, or some way. Nothing is obsolete or absolute and everything will come back. Pass judgment on the things you watch and hear as your critical thinking is what sets you apart from animals. Don’t be afraid of voice your opinions.
