Pamela Carriere: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Hard Work, dedication, perseverance, intuition, trial and error, love, acceptance, and patience!

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

A conceptual artist.
A family person, a friend, a listener.
Someone who is always willing to learn.

Why do you do what you do?

I love looking for something special within a frozen moment.
I enjoy the fact that people can take away something entirely different from someone else by looking at an image. I love that photography has the power to make people react to a moment that the photographer has decided was special enough to capture. I love that a photograph has no right or wrong perception.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

A few years ago, I was backpacking in Europe. Once I arrived in Paris, I became fascinated with the people. Sartorially, culturally, facially, etc. I laid eyes on an older woman and without any hesitation, my hands immediately grabbed my camera and I asked my friend to pretend I was photographing him. I must have snapped about 20 images of the same woman. There was something so inticing about seeing her. I wanted the rest of the world (or whoever saw my photograph) to share this enthrallment I experienced once I saw this woman.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

That would definitely be completing my first year at OCAD University. At OCADU, your first year, you are required to create art of all mediums; painting, drawing, sculpture, woodwork…any and all forms of art. None of which I have practiced or have any particular talent in. This was extremely stressful and difficult for me. But after years and years of dreaming about being an OCADU student, I knew I had to push through and just get everything done with great effort, hard work and confidence. At times I can honestly say that I has questioned why I was there when I felt I wasn’t good enough in some areas of the art world and a few times, I thought about leaving the institution. But I told myself that I was there for a reason and that I had to believe in my unknown and undiscovered capabilities.

As far as who helped me, my family has always been my number one support and guiding force. Whatever I needed, they would do. They put up with my frustration, modeled for me endless times, helped me carry heavy a$$ equipment, and hugged me and told me it would all be worth it in a short time.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Many of my professors at OCADU have inspired me artistically, one in particular, Kotama Bouabane. I was always pushed to reach my full potential and one quote from him that I will always remember and carry with me “I want you to create art that you are proud of”.

My family has shaped me into the person I am today. I strive to make them happy and proud  of what I do. I dedicated my final body of work (my Thesis) to my parents as a small token of appreciation for all they have done for me.

And numerous friends of mine have also been a source of inspiration, as well as ex-boyfriends. Without heartbreak, there is no pain, which turns into determination to succeed, which turns into hard work that will pay off regardless.

A co-worker of mine has mentioned to me that she has been inspired to take up photography following a conversation we had about my journey.

I hope to someday inspire anyone with a dream.
Anyone with doubts, who will hopefully recognize that whatever is desired, can be accomplished.
Anyone who feels as though they can express their feelings through an art form.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

One mistake I have made throughout my journey would have to be not taking constructive criticism positively. And procrastination! It will be your worst enemy!

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I am working on a documentary film about the culture of Colombia, (where my mother is from). I am also in the process of making photo-books which are mostly portraits of people I have photographed throughout my travels.

So far there will be books from:
and The United States

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

The advice that I have is:

  1. Never doubt yourself: you have a dream for a reason. Fulfillment of that dream is more satisfying that words can express.

Listen to professors, colleagues, professionals, competitors, and enemies: Sometimes their advice is the best you can receive.

    3. Never give up: working hard is exhausting, but completing a body of work and celebrating your success is more gratifying than quitting.

  1. Watch films, look at paintings, listen to music, be scared, have a glass of wine at night, maybe even smoke a joint. You will be surprised at how easily you can be inspired and ideas will come easily.

  1. Take time for yourself. Your success mostly comes from what you do with your time and your creativity. Keep a journal. Listen to people around you; on the subway, at the food court, in line at the store, people on their cell phones. What you choose to listen to, can generate concepts and can potentially be your next source of inspiration.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Step back and take the time to see the bigger picture. Not everything may be as it seems. And sometimes it can be. Use every single one of your talents. Never be afraid. Ask questions!

And be yourself.
