Michael Sahakian: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

The first words that come to my mind is my father. He started off with barely anything and he built an entire company off of his own wit and passion. He loved what he did and he used to it to make a life he enjoys. What he's accomplished shows all 3 qualities stated.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

Who I am is who everyone knows, me. I am an 18 year old kid who loves rap, comic books, video games and having a good time with my friends. But just like everybody else I get hurt or angry or sad, and for the longest time I wasn't able to really voice that side until music came along. I use music to show everyone both sides of me, I am just another stupid kid in some respects but I also have a mind that doesn't shut up and that reflects through my songs. In summary, I am my music.

Why do you do what you do?

I do it to vent, to play around with, and to help other people. Some songs I just use to play around with different flows or to make funny metaphors and punchlines. Other songs are to tell a story that relates to my life or what I went through to become who I am. And then there are songs to tell a cautionary story or a story that other people can relate to or just songs to tell people that they aren't alone in how they feel.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

Since as long as I can remember I've liked rap over any kind of music. I used to blast Double Dutch Bus and any Eminem song whenever I could, especially Lose Yourself and Cleaning Out My Closet. When I was 11 my Dad got me this little Red Notebook that had a dragon on the front cause he knew how much I liked dragons. I used to memorize rap lyrics because how they played with rhymeschemes and flows amazed me, so one day I decided to give it a try. The first song I ever wrote was titled "Fat" and it was about how people would make fun of me for my weight and how it made me felt. Ever since then I've just been growing as a lyricist and rapper, my flow and wordplay has come so far from the days of that Dragon notebook and I just want to keep growing.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing I've had to overcome is the pressure I put on myself to "succeed". In truth my music is very unknown. I post it on social media and get friends to share it but it just doesn't seem to get any attention. At first and even now it bugs me when I look at song and theres only 200 views, but I've recently come to the realization that success shouldn't be measured by how many people love what you make. Success should be measured by how much you love what you make, I look at my songs and I am proud of them. I can release that holding my head high that it is me and my thinking and my life, if that appeals to people then cool, but at the end of the day I'm still doing what I love and I'm still having fun.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My two biggest inspirations are my Dad and Eminem. My Dad taught me to chase what you love no matter what and Eminem taught me to be myself and to not to give a damn what anybody thinks about me. I don't know if I've inspired or taught anything to anyone but I hope one day I do.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

The biggest mistake I've made so far was not knowing enough about the business and expecting it to be simple. When I started recording for my album I had no clue about track outs and stems and prices for owning beats and licensing and all. I thought I just wrote the song and recorded it and put it out but it's so much more complicated. All I have to say is do your research and make sure you know the right way to do what you love. I've learnt that there is much more to the music business than I initially thought and you need more than just yourself to do it all so get a team behind you if you can.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

My upcoming project has actually been kept a secret for the most part but I figure what better place to unveil it than in my first ever interview. The upcoming project is my first complete and official album for itunes, the album's title is "Sonder" which is a word from the dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. It has a whole bunch of different kinds of songs with some Montreal artist features on it along with some spoken word interludes. It's taken me over a year and I'm almost wrapping it up so it should release soon. The goal is to release the album and book some shows at clubs around the city to promote and perform it. So if you see any clubs promiting an MiQ show then come out! I will also be releasing a few music videos for tracks from the album.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

My only advice for people is to be yourself. I know it's cheesy and all but it's true, don't ever let someone tell you how to be you and don't ever try to tell someone how they have to act. Take advice, think critically, but in the end you have to be sure that your decision is your decision, not someone else's. And also, I've always believed the world would be better if we all lived by one motto, Don't be a dick, and then we'd all get along.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

I just want to use my last words here to thank my parents for always supporting me both motivationally and financially, I couldn't do it without them. And thank you to all of you reading this, I hope you can all appreciate what I make as much as I do.
