Michael Cumming: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

I compulsively seek out music, videos, literature, visual art, etc. so inspiration is something I'm fortunate enough to encounter on a very regular basis. Passion is normally regarded as a positive thing but I think it can be a dangerous and delusional thing as well. Approaching everything in life with at least a pinch of rational detachment can allow one to understand situations more clearly. Strength is a rare and amazing quality and the multitude of different incarnations of it never cease to amaze me.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I'm basically a guy wandering around trying to figure out what situations I fit best into. Trying not to get hung up on concrete ideas of how I want things to turn out but instead trying to do as many different things as possible and embrace the craziness and uncertainty of life.

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I think it's the best thing I can offer the world.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

To be honest I don't really know what I want to do. My career/life goals have changed so many times as a result of both events beyond my control and my own choices. I just try to look for opportunities in life where I can use whatever skills I have to contribute something cool.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing I've had to overcome actually ended up being an incredibly important and valuable experience in my life. After university, the plan was to go to grad school but after being rejected from a number of schools two years in a row I realized that wasn't going to happen. It was hard to accept the fact that I was going to have to rethink my career goals but at the same time it helped me understand the necessity of rolling with the punches and adapting in life.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My best friend Aaron constantly inspires me. Almost every time we speak I leave feeling like I could do anything. As far as me inspiring people, I came across this great quote from Epictetus, “Don't explain your philosophy. Embody it." I try really hard to live the kind of life that inspires people.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

One big mistake I've made is taking the easy way out of things. Choosing comfort and mediocrity over a difficult but ultimately fulfilling path.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I've been working with a number of local organizations who are trying to get a supervised injection site opened in Ottawa. The goal is to release a series of videos to educate the public on this completely misunderstood healthcare issue.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Accept the fact that there are a limitless amount of things that you don't know and approach every situation with the necessary openness and respect to allow life to surprise and amaze you.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

This was a really fun interview. Great questions! : )
