Maripier Normand: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I’m a girl who has Asperger Syndrome, which is slight degree of Autism. I’m socially awkward but, I’m direct, honest, friendly and loyal. I’m very artistic because I usually draw some manga, singing, playing the guitar and piano and I used to dance Hip Hop. I’m the type of girl who’s always in her bubble, if you pop it, you’ll be in big shit! I do have some aspects that a person who has autism like trouble with communication, looking in the eye and much more.

Why do you do what you do?

Good question… well being a Photographer was like my plan B for my career because at first I wanted to be a musician, a composer or whatsoever…and when I was discussing with the counsellor… it was too much complicated to register to a music college because it’s from Quebec, and there’s some classes that I didn’t take. So I decided to go as a Photographer, but I didn’t regret my choice. :) And I consider Photography as Art. And making art is my specialty.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

Like I just explained on the first question, its pretty much in 12th grade that I realized that Photography is something that I like to do. Since I was 15 years old, I went to a summer camp at my college and I tried Photography… more that I learn photography, more that I begin to love it. After that, I begin to do some pictures for the school year book and do some photo shoots here and there.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Stress & Not being shy. Because I’m socially awkward, I have trouble to communicate correctly to my customer because sometimes I’m afraid that they don’t understand me what I’m trying to say to them what I want to do in the shoot. So I try to say it directly with a small and simple phrase that they could understand me. For stress, it’s been with me like forever… the only thing that can decrease my stress is to bring my blue ball that I could squish it with all my fury and stress or just breath deeply and calmly and say to myself: “Marip, you can do this!”.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I know that my music teacher who teaches me to play the guitar told me that: “Do never give up what you do because at first, I thought that you’ll gave up easily, but you didn’t. I knew it that you are special and you know what? I believe in you.” and there’s my mom but I’ll tell you a story why she inspired me so and that she really encouraged me: since I was in elementary school, in second grade, my mom went to the teacher’s meeting to know how’s your kids doing in class… this teacher told my mom: “your child will not go that far, she’ll be in a special class and will never go to college or university.” My mother was so offended that she told her: “You know what!? I’ll prove to you that my daughter will be in a normal class like the others, that she’ll go to college!” My mom was doing her own best to help me till I get where I am now today.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Never change your memory card into a different camera. If you put a memory card in a Nikon camera and you decided to put in a Canon camera, it will fuck your screen. It happened when I was doing the shoot for my tutor’s wedding and I was freaking out, my new Nikon camera doesn’t work anymore because of that shitty problem so I was stuck taking picture with my old Canon camera.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

For now, I want to graduate. But after, I’m gonna do some shoots to win some money and gather all this cash to buy some equipments and a studio; depends if it’s a place that I can rent or when I’ll build my dream home, I’ll make a studio.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Don’t underestimate persons with autism, try to understand.

Because people like me that have Autism has their own dream too that wants to come true. Gave them a chance, let them speak, let them show you what they can do because it can surprise you.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

I just want to say thank you Amir for everything… since I met you, I felt that you open a door for me, that can let express myself to the world that an autistic person can be recognized by his talent. Thanks again to post my art work. If you guys wants to know more what it’s like to live as an autistic girl or has any question about Autism, you can always let a comment or a message on my facebook or instagram and I would be happy to respond to you.

Autism isn't the end of the world. It's the beginning of a whole new one. :)
