Maccie Paquette: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

The first word that comes to my mind when I hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength isn’t a word so much as it is a person- my Mother. My Mother is my hero. I have never met a woman so full of love and so resilient. When I hear those words I think of my Mom, and how I strive every day to become more like her—passionate, strong, and inspiring.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

It’s always difficult to sum up who “you” are because who we are as humans and artists is so complicated. There are so many elements that make up who someone is. I would say I’m a lover. I love music, I love people, I love learning, most of all I just love existing. I am strong and I am vulnerable. I am perfect in my imperfections. I am more crazy then sane and I’m perfectly happy that way. I am sensitive but confident and I’m always trying to improve myself. I am an artist and a musician and I’m just trying to become the best version of myself, Maccie that I can become. I am a Singer/Songwriter and Performer with a deep passion for advocating human rights and equality.

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I would be entirely unhappy doing anything else. Music is my air and if I can use that to uplift and inspire other people, that’s what I am going to do.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

It might seem a little strange to say but I think I always knew that I wanted to do music but was just too shy to share my passion with the public. I have always been musical. Some of my earliest memories involve me singing and I love trying out and learning about new instruments. The events that led to me pursuing music as my full time job are spread over my entire lifetime but what made me finally start acting out in the open was the realization that I would not be happy doing anything else and that in following my passion, I liberate other people to follow theirs as well.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

To be completely honest, the toughest thing I had to overcome, I am still in the process of overcoming. I had a very dark childhood and experienced a lot of things that I am still coming to terms with and still trying to heal from. I can’t whittle my experiences down to one particular situation or moment because I feel they are all so tightly intertwined.  I will say that my abusive past resulted in a strong self-hate. I had to work through depression, suicidal thoughts, self-mutilation problems, eating disorders and deep trust issues. I am much stronger because of it but it was still extremely difficult. Even though I do not struggle with these forms of self-abuse anymore, it is sometimes still very difficult to accept my memories and strive towards growth instead of cripple and fall back into a depression. What has always helped me has been redirecting my energy and focus to my music. If you put your energy into something positive then it is no longer a negative thing, but a vessel for beauty. Music is my way of understanding the world and a medium through which the world might also understand me.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My older brothers are two of my biggest inspirations. I love them beyond belief. I think seeing them thrive in their different talents (skateboarding and music) really made me want to become better. Growing up they always pushed me to become a better me, to work harder, and think more; I took their advice and now I believe I inspire them to continue working hard and following their dreams.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I have made many many mistakes during my journey but the worst mistake of all is not always letting the people who love and support me know just how much their love and support meant to me. There was one time when I was so busy I forgot to send a thank you to a radio station that had played my song. It was an innocent mistake that I couldn’t make up for because the guy felt deeply unappreciated and since I didn’t remember until it was too late, I made him feel like his support didn’t matter. I never want to make anyone feel like that again. Give those who support and love you your love and support back. Let them know how much they matter because they really do matter.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Right now I am in the midst of completing my first EP titled “Abandon”, and will be releasing my newest single also titled, “Abandon”, the last week of May! I am so excited to share my new music with everyone and really hope I am able to affect people in a way that they will remember and treasure.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

The best advice I can give anyone is love. Once you learn to appreciate, you will see the true beauty of your existence and you will not settle for doing anything that doesn’t make you happy.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Have dreams and follow them. When you find someone who believes in you as much or more than you do, hold onto them. My manager is my biggest fan and toughest critic and one of the most special people I have ever been blessed with knowing.

I have been singing for as long as I can remember. Singing has always been something I have just naturally done and my way of expressing myself.

Fav Song

My favorite song of all time is Etta James’, “I’d Rather Go Blind”. I can’t lie, I’m a huge romantic. In this song Etta sings “I’d rather go blind then to see you walk away from me”. To me, if you can say those words and mean them, you’re either crazy, or you’ve found true love—maybe both. I think it’s devastatingly beautiful.

Fav Musician/Vocal artist/Rapper/Singer

I have several favorite artists! I love old school artists like Ray Charles, and Etta James, but I also have a deep love for Beyoncé and Eminem.

Fav Movie

I fell in love with, “The Wolf of Wallstreet”. Not sure if I would call it my all-time favorite, but it’s definitely up there!

Fav Actor/Actress

My favorite actor of all time is Johnny Depp! He’s talented, intelligent, stylish, and incredibly gorgeous!

Fav Visual artist/photographer/videographer/Dancer/choreographer

My favorite visual artist is actually my friend Shaun Hedican. He’s a Canadian Native artist. I love his work because it’s all very natural and usually contains some sort of message about interconnectivity, love and unity.

Fav Sport to watch

My favorite sport to watch is skateboarding and my favorite skateboarders are my two older brothers!

Fav Sport to play

My favorite sports are ones that don’t involve teams. I love running, biking, and swimming which perhaps don’t count, but those are my favorites anyways!
