Laina Rauma: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Inspiration: women

Passion: women

Strength: women

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am Laina. A person who wants to do GRAND things. A person who pretends to know more than she does at times (an insecure trait, I never want to look dumb). A person who wants to know everything but is overwhelmed at the thought. Passionate, protective, a very hard worker, a square of a hippie, the bestest friend in the world, a person with 13 letters in her name, a person whose favorite number is also 13, a shy person, a loud person, a crazy person. A happy person with an overactive mind. I dunno, man. I’m me. Have you ever wished you could be someone else and see yourself? I often do but as I type this I’m sure if I had that chance, I’d get me all wrong. Unless I could be me looking at me. haha.

Why do you do what you do?

Because I can’t imagine being exhausted every day doing anything else. I choose to exhaust myself with making clothes. It’s the strongest creative urge in my brain. I have others but this one is the one that makes me tick. I can’t stop.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I tried making a sweater at the age of 7. Hideous thing but I wanted to do it. Used my mom’s sewing machine and ended up throwing it out before anyone could see it because I was so embarrassed at how badly it turned out. I had these beautiful aunties (Annette, Suzie and Nina) they use to take me to thrift stores as a kid and they’d re-work their finds with my grandma’s sewing machine. I idolized them so much. They were stunning and they were always wearing the coolest shit. I think as I got older that just stuck with me. I never wanted to wear what everyone else was wearing. I’d get furious (actually red in the face, hot in the head furious) if I went out and I was wearing the same thing as someone else. But I’m sure that’s a lot of people. I dunno I just always knew. It’s the thing that comes the most natural to me. I just have a lot of ideas and I feel the need to create them.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Moving to Los Angeles was the toughest for sure. It’s very scary moving from where you grew up, away from all your family and friends with no money and no “sure thing.” My friend Kay helped me get my first working Visa here as her stylist and I will forever be grateful for that.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I don’t know if I’ve ever inspired anyone directly. I hope so. Isn’t that what every artist wants? I’ve been inspired by so many things but I followed my dreams because I had to. I literally felt in my bones that I had to or I’d be a loser who failed herself at life. I can be very hard on myself. I remember taking my parents for breakfast and telling them “I’ve decided I’m going to move to LA in 6 months” and all my mom said was “okay well, you’ve said it out loud. Now you have to do it.” My mom raised us 4 kids on her own while going to school and working full-time and my dad is a full-blown Aquarius, musician, artist to the T. Like, look up Aquarius in the dictionary and you’d see his picture kinda thing. I am simply a product of these two amazing people. haha

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Spending money on things that haven’t made a lot of money. But that’s just trial and error and I don’t regret it. I’ll probably do it again. The thing I’ve learned is not everyone is going to love what I love. And what can I possibly do about that except lose a little bit of money. No big deal. It’s not mine anyway. I make a little, spend a little, I’m really just moving it around and buying shoes and fabric and wine with what I have left. hahaha.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Many, many, MANY. But I’d rather talk about it after it happens. Not that I’m afraid to jinx it, it’ll just be cooler when it happens. ;-)

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Be yourself. People love to say that’s cliche but it’s the best advice in the world. The one thing you can be that nobody else can is you. We need a you. We don’t have a you. Bring you. The mind can make you crazy, the heart can make you sad, but the gut’s been knowing. Go with that.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Act purely with love. Be patient. Trust time. And try your hardest to be understanding. When you realize the things that hurt you have nothing to do with you the world is a less scary place.

Fav Song

Way too many - let’s say Strange Magic by Electric Light Orchestra because I was just listening to it and it’s magical.

Fav Musician/Vocal artist/Rapper/Singer

The Beatles, Billie Holiday, Jay Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, Pharrell, Outkast, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Drake, Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, Common, Boom Clap Bachelors, Al Green, Q-Tip, The Isley Brothers, The Black Keys.. etc etc etc.. some then, some now, some always. I don’t have a favorite. I have favorite music for different moods. There’s so much amazing new music out now but my favorites evoke nostalgia.

Fav Movie

(these favorites are extremely hard btw..) hmmm, The Sound of Music, Cinderella, Aladdin, Enough, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Never Been Kissed, Dumb & Dumber, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Clueless, Mrs. Doubtfire, Hook..

Fav Actor/Actress

Favorite actor has got to be either Leo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp or Edward Norton. I can’t be certain if it’s because these people played big roles in the movies I watched in my teens or the scripts they choose but they’re great. I also love Will Smith, Kevin Spacey and Robin Williams who all remind me of my Dad for different reasons. Favorite actress, hmmm…… Lisa Kudrow. I just started watching The Comeback and she is just fucking brilliant. Really makes me appreciate what she brought to the Phoebe character in Friends.

Fav Clothing brand

Laina Rauma ;-) ;-)

Fav Visual artist/Photographer/Filmaker/Dancer/Choreographer

Oh man. There are so many. I watched a Beyonce documentary and it really made me appreciate what she brought to the “Run The World” video. Her vision and her hand in literally every piece of what she performs. I really love Tom Ford. He’s an amazing designer but I also love his photography. Yoko Ono has got this quirk about her that I just adore. Also a fellow Aquarius ;-) I love what she brought out in John and the story of how they met is amazing. She held an art exhibit and had a plain ol’ apple for sale for $500. John thought it was just fucking hilarious and was instantly infatuated with her. I love that kind of artistic confidence, selling an apple for $500. My boyfriend recently introduced me to Wes Anderson films and WOW. The aesthetic of it all is just beautiful and so pleasing to the eye. Absolutely perfect. But honestly my most favorite has got to be Andy Warhol. When I was about 18-19 I was obsessed with reading all about him. Just a really beautiful, insecure, brilliant soul wearing a silver, spray painted wig. I love the colors, I love the brilliance in the simplicity, I just feel like I “get” him.

Fav Sport to watch

None. Couldn’t care less. hahaha

Fav Sport to play

Volleyball, baseball or soccer. Haven’t played any of them since high school but those were my favs.
