Kayo: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

There’s an interesting dynamic between the notions of ‘who’ and ‘what’ you are. Who I am is Filbert Salton, aka Kayo Guevarra, Son of Venetia and Gilbert, Child of St Lucia. What I am is an artist, and that has ultimately become who I am as well.

Why do you do what you do?

I do it because it is important to me, it is a part of me at this point. It is therapeutic beyond comprehension for me. I do it because it is my way of giving a piece of my soul to this world. It is my way of leaving something behind long after I’m gone, that stood for something.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I started simply writing poetry at 14. That quickly transitioned into music while I was in high school. I think it was my first performance that really made it clear for me. I performed a rap verse to R.Kelly’s ‘World’s Greatest’ with my high school choir as part of a talent festival the school had. From that point, something clicked, and I never looked back.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing I’ve had to over come throughout my entire career was getting in my own way and being my own worst critic. I’ve done hundreds of songs that I’ve never put out because I thought they weren’t good enough. I constantly questioned myself. I have even questioned my resolve to continue this path. What has helped me through that is the honestly and support of loved ones, as well as seeing the genuine impact my music has had on complete strangers.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Honestly, I’ve been inspired by so many things! My brother, who had to overcome incredible obstacles to become the man he is today. Ronald ‘Boo’ Hinkson, who is like the God Father of music in St Lucia, proving that it is possible to follow your dreams and as great as you had imagined. Because I’m constantly inspired by so many people and things, I always strive to have my music inspire others. That’s why I constantly aim to create music of some sort of message or substance. Hopefully that has inspired people out there.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

One mistake I think I’ve made in my journey was signing my first record deal. I don’t necessarily think it was the wrong decision, but I feel like I might not have been ready at the time. I may have definitely think I was, but in retrospect, I got there too soon. I didn’t have enough leverage in that corporate infrastructure.  I was still finding myself artistically and personal. There’s a plethora of things I would’ve done differently. But, with that being said, that was a step in my life that was pivotal, and I’m ever so grateful for that. Plus, I now know how to better maneuver within that environment.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

We just released an EP entitled ‘NOWHERE’. This is the first of 4 projects we aim to release over the course of the next 10-12 months. I can’t speak on it too much. I want to leave something to the imagination, but I promise it’s going to be a great journey!

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Keep Going. That’s the only thing that has separated me from my peers. If you are passionate about something, Keep going.
