Katia Pershin: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

What I get from and need in my profession. I am very lucky.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am one who loves to engage and connect fully with what I am doing or with who I am with at the present moment.

Why do you do what you do?

I did a masters program in counseling with the intention of helping others and feeling good about it while doing so. I landed in photography and could not imagine a better way of helping others feel incredible, inside and out. It gives me so much joy to see my clients’ reaction during and after a photoshoot, despite their initial fears and insecurities. It’s an honour to be a witness to someone’s vulnerability and courage – which is what I think is needed, to stand in front of a giant lens.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

It’s a ‘follow your dreams’ kind of story...

One summer, I had to choose between leaving my safe government job or taking a contract as a mental health counselor. I didn’t feel either were who I wanted to be and I struggled to decide between the two options. My partner suggested I think of a third better option. I had no clue what that could be at the time.

But soon after however, I had a (literal) dream that I was a photographer with my own studio…I actually imagined myself going to home hardware and buying big lamps and curtains – it was very homemade in the dream lol. Even though I didn’t know how to use a real studio at the time, when I awoke, my intuition told me it was the right direction for me. And so I followed my dream…

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Charging people. I used to be so shy to talk about money, but with time and training from my partner who is an entrepreneur, I realized that in order to continue to do what I do, to grow as a photographer, and provide an exceptional experience for each client, I had to implement a business component to my art.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I am inspired by people who are not afraid of change and are open to possibilities. Anyone who works hard and from the heart is a source of inspiration for me.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I’ve made several mistakes, mainly involving not speaking my mind. I learned by experiencing the consequences of not doing so…and so now I try to assert myself when I feel it is right. I’m still learning!

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Goals? I always have a vision of the bigger picture in mind and in my heart. But on a day to day, I go with the flow and trust that life will offer me what I need as long as I continue doing what I love.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Don’t compare yourself to anyone else but the you of yesterday. Keep pushing yourself to grow every step of the way.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

I make amazing chocolate chip banana blueberry pancakes.
