Kaja Tirrul: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I’m Kaja!

Why do you do what you do?

I can’t imagine not doing it. When I’m shooting it’s the only time that I feel completely awake, taking pictures and working with pictures fuels me. It is a blessing and a curse because photography has always been something that I need to do. It is almost as though there is not another option, I feel like I have to do it. Don’t get me wrong, it makes me the happiest I can ever be, but that means that I kind of never have a break from it

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

For my 10th birthday, I received a Kodak 110 camera as a gift. I was completely hooked on taking pictures after that. I would take my rolls of 110 film and walk to the local shop to have them developed. I would patiently wait a week to pick up my 4” x 5” prints, which I would pour over and carefully put away into albums.

After receiving my mom’s old Canon AE-1 camera, my uncle taught me how to use his darkroom and develop my own film and prints. Watching my image slowly appear into a photograph was like magic! I realize that sounds cliché, but it was a feeling I could not get enough of. I just knew this was what I wanted to do for life.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing I have always had to overcome is myself. Getting out of my head and just feel and react, instead of over-thinking everything. People close to me have always motivated and inspired me when I am struggling with what I am working on. My best friend is a sounding board for all of my crazy ideas and always nods and tells me how great they are even when she has no idea what I’m talking about. My boyfriend knows and loves my need to photograph, and simply accepts when I’m being driven crazy by it. I have a great support group of fellow photographers, mainly from university, and we all just get each other in a way no one else does. Logistically, money and time are my biggest enemies – but who can’t say that? I suppose Beyoncé is one of them…

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My mom has always inspired me. She is a smart, funny, interesting, strong and hard working woman. I have never seen her be lazy or boring for even a moment. She can stop and find interest in, and learn from, everything around her which is something I wish everyone had and something I am lucky to have inherited from her in some small way.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I think being young and thinking that things would just come to me regardless if I worked for them or not. Working hard is so important. Hustle, hustle, hustle, everyday.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I have been doing a project on twins for almost two years now. I am obsessed with twin siblings and want to photograph them all! If you know any – send them my way!

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Work hard for what you feel passionate about. I think one of the saddest things in the world is wasted talent.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Thank You!

Currently my favorite photographers are Chris Buck, Lauren Greenfield and Nirrimi Hakonson. I love Buck’s humour, Greenfield’s honesty, and Hakonson’s beauty. Of course I have a love for the greats; Diane Arbus and Richard Avedon in particular. Also lately I’ve been sucked in by Floria Sigismondi’s book “Immune”, I love her work. I think it is great to have inspirations come from others. Especially when those “others” are people who have been in the industry much longer than I and have much to teach. However, being influenced by another photographer and emulating another photographer are two separate concepts. The latter is never a good idea. More importantly, directly comparing your own work to anyone else’s is ridiculous and will only drive you crazy.
