John Alfred Lee: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Time to get out of bed, no time to waste! Ok maybe 5 more minutes but ill dream about what I have to do today.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I wear many hats.  I just want to do awesome stuff with awesome people and make a little photo magic on the way.

Why do you do what you do?

It feels right.  I do what I do because it’s what makes me happy. Keeps me interested.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I always wanted to create; whether it was lego voltrons, awesome 3D cells for science class, tearing apart toys to make my own creations as a kid.  Looking back there were periods in my life where I did take photos here and there specially when my daughter was born. But I had responsibilities and pressure to work a 9-5 and be straight laced.  It wasn’t until a few years ago that I picked up a camera again and fell in love with photography and began to see it as part of who I was going to be.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Taking a hit and risking my financial stability to peruse my passion.  My mom was my biggest supporter.  She still helps me balance the books and keeps me in check when I want to spend it all my money on new toys.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Hard to say any one in particular, had a photography teacher once that was the first person to really tear me a new one. Which definitely inspired me to want to do better. As much as those gut checks can bruise the ego, accepting criticism and trying to be critical about your own work is important. Canadian fashion photographer Koby also gave me some advice a.k.a pointed out where I could improve when everyone else was just telling me it was awesome.  Support is good but an honest critique from someone who can see the nuances that you are not yet aware of is priceless.

Also seeing Canadian talent like Koby, Martin Prihoda and Matt Barnes all people that I have followed and admired for years doing such amazing work really drives me to push myself to do more.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Don’t be complacent.   It’s hard sometimes we all get comfortable and set in our ways; but change and adversity is where growth comes.  Don’t fear it, embrace it.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Lots of plans but I don’t really talk too much about what’s to come.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Give a fuck, be passionate and follow your dreams; live the life you want to live, not the one people expect you to live.  Also don’t forget to be present; doing and working and having drive is important but don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Be excellent to each other and party on dudes.
