Jimmy Douglas: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Work ethic

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

Growing up in suburban New Jersey, in the shadow of New York City, I have always had a keen sense of adventure seeking out new places and meeting new people.

Why do you do what you do?

The best way to describe my work is a hopeless romantic ideal version of life.  I take pictures to make sense of what goes on inside of my head, some of my photographs are pretty straightforward but others are extremely thought out.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I first took a TV production class in the 8th grade and fell in love with the idea of creating images.  When I started high school I began going to a lot of local shows and started bringing a camera along, soon I discovered that I could get photo passes to take pictures of my favorite bands.  Somewhere between freshman to senior year my style evolved more towards environmental portraits which is what my main focus is today.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Trying to find my own style, I danced around a bunch of different styles until I found something that I was truly passionate about.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My friends are my biggest inspirations.  I am forever thankful that I am always surrounded by people who share similar creative interests as I do, who are always down for an adventure, and are willing to take a few risks along the way.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Looking up to others.  I feel like if you look up to someone too much you begin to emulate who that person is rather than who you really are.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’m continuing to travel for the rest of 2015 and into 2016 to new cities every month; I also have quite a few new conceptual ideas that I’m going to begin working on towards the end of November into December.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

I don’t think you ever stop growing creatively, it is amazing how the littlest things can inspire you in the greatest ways.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

If you like taking pictures, take pictures of things that make you happy, people make photography more difficult than it necessarily needs to be with all kinds of rules, but I find that some of my best photographs are ones where I’m not following all the traditional “rules.”
