Jessica Rose: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Inspiration – Vintage

Passion – Vibrant colours

Strength - Tenacity

Why do you do what you do?

As you can see when you relate back to my favourite movies and visual artists, something that really fascinates me is perception. To be able to illustrate an idea or an emotion externally that is otherwise internalized is something I find very important. I have a vivid imagination I want to unleash and bring to life visually.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

As soon as I could get my hands on a camera I was hooked. I took a lot of photos of random things and my step dad used to get upset and say I was wasting film; in my mind I was capturing photos of things no one ever really stopped to look at and I found it thrilling.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

It’s very hard for photographers to be compensated properly in this industry. Everyone sees it as a hobby that doesn’t take a lot of time and will offer you jobs that will be “a good portfolio piece.” That being said, there are also a lot of people who understand the business end of photography and are happy to pay a fair rate; this is what allows me to keep doing what I love.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I definitely get inspired every single day by an array of things: a song, a colour, clothing or even certain lighting in a room. The thing that inspires me most is the images that make you pause before you flip the page in a magazine. I hope I’ve inspired someone; my personal mantra that I try to embody every day is “aspire to inspire.” Even small acts of kindness contribute to fulfilling this idea. I used to tutor speech pathology to kids who had been abused or abandoned by their parents; I hopefully inspired them to be more comfortable communicating with others.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Probably just doing work without being paid. I’ve learned not to work for free often because word travels fast you don’t charge anything.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I have a few clients who have booked me to shoot them and I’m very excited to start planning creatively and get them fantastic images they will be proud to use. I’ve been brainstorming a photo series for a long time and just living with my ideas before I translate them to photos (which will be soon).

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Create a positive from every negative. Life is like film…we develop from the negatives.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

:)
