Jay Dot: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Inspiration: Spontaneous

Passion: Juice

Strength: Focus

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I’m this guy you don’t know yet but I’m pretty cool.

Why do you do what you do?

‘Cause I love it. It’s going to sound cliché but it’s kind of like my therapy especially when I do it with the people I started with.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

When I was mimicking the Back Street Boys and Blackstreet in my basement and doing the outfit change and all that. I was basically playing a videotape of their show and mimicking everything. That’s how I learned stage presence and interaction with the crowd.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

To be heard. It’s not easy to catch people’s attention so I tried different sounds, different styles, different approach because I was in a group and we all had different ideas and I just said to myself let me get back to the basics, just create and I did it with the same people who I was disagreeing with about the group project and I think that’s the beauty of it.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Well, when I really think about it Kaytranada, High-Klassified, Da-P and Shash’U are true sources of inspiration for Montreal’s artists. I’ve seen these guys evolution and it’s just beautiful how things worked out for them. I’m just proud because the world recognized our local talent. They’re big now, I’m glad to get in touch with these people from time to time.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Rushing projects for no reason. I just take my time and do what I got to do now and release it when I genuinely think it’s the good time to release it.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Working on the visual concept of my next single ‘Godivas’ off my last EP King Pleasure.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Just pay attention.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)
