Jake Carruthers: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

The vision of living in a beach house in California, surrounded by the chilliest of vibes, and all because of the success I’ve found in doing what I love. I guess my apartment in Toronto will do until then.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am an art student, illustrator, skateboard rider, clothing maker and sunlight enthusiast with a bunch of tattoos and a haircut from the 40’s.

Why do you do what you do?

Because it is the only thing that I can say I’ve spent more time doing in my life than anything else, and the effort, grief, pain and eye strain I’ve put into being the very best illustrator that I can be would be wasted if I succumbed to any other path. There is simply no other option any more. Not only that, but I get excited about drawing, and getting better. I care about it more than almost anything in my entire life.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

My mom is the head of visual arts at Huron Heights in Newmarket, ON, but first and foremost, she is an artist. I grew up with my mom constantly being involved in art shows of all kinds. Though when I was a kid, although I found it exciting, I didn’t see it as irregular. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized that my mother was incredibly talented, and was still doing what she loved. She was my biggest inspiration, and probably the reason I’m still an artist today. My sister and I are a year apart, and instead of growing up with basketballs and hockey sticks, we got crayons, paper and pencils. (Though I did turn down hockey for guitar lessons) In short - I’ve always known that I wanted to be an artist, it would be next to impossible to find the pinnacle moment. I’m not willing to settle for much outside of what I want, and can believe I can do.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I believed I subconsciously answered this is an earlier question, though I wouldn’t be able to feel so confident without the constant support of my best friends, my girlfriend, my dad and my sister (Who has just finished her first year at York University, majoring in fine arts) as well. As for directly inspiring others, I’d say that occasionally others tell me that I have inspired them, and it is the best thing I can be told. The amount of inspiration I get from hearing this is immeasurable. Most of this I have received on social media, which has definitely been a large part of my platform as an artist. Other artists on Instagram may leave comments, or may even take the time to re draw one of my pieces and credit me. The community aspects of art within social media are one of the only reasons I am okay with living in a digital era.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I am incredibly stubborn, and have turned down what might have been great advise a few times, simply because I didn’t immediately agree with it. Recently however, my ears are constantly open, and I am constantly attempting new things to improve my work, and my work ethic. For example - until this past year, I wouldn’t be caught dead practicing realism, as I didn’t find it important, its not part of my style, and I thought I was already really good at it. Turns out I’m wrong. I have been practicing realism quite often now, and I have seen a huge difference in the quality of my work. Go figure.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’ve been working with many bands within the merchandise industry (Such Gold, Seaway, Cruel Hand) over the last while, and am continuing to work within this industry. Poster, album and merchandise art is some of my favourite to do, and gives me an opportunity to stay in the music scene without creating music. I have also been able to talk to a lot of my favourite musicians, and am continuing to progress. I would like to continue this and speak to bigger artists, as well as keep great relationships with the ones I am or have currently worked with.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Don’t over stress, stay dedicated, and don’t be afraid to learn… Wow… that sounded corny…. Stay Chill.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Everything was radical and nothing sucked.
