Hennessy Vandeur: Interview

\\

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

The love and pursuit of art, in all its forms.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

At heart, I’m a creator. I love creating, and I hope to find my place in this world doing what I love.

Why do you do what you do?

I can’t explain it - it’s simply an integral part of me at this point. Creating art runs in my blood. Also, photography saved me from a very dark time in my life.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I learned to draw before I could walk or talk, so I suppose art just has been an important facet in my life since the very beginning.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

I was a foster kid in a fucked-up system. It was tough surviving in the system without losing half your mind, and to accept the sense of abandonment that comes with it. I heavily depended on my art to keep me steady; eventually it was photography that lifted me from a dark place and changed me into a better person.

I was on a rooftop, this depressed fifteen-year-old kid angry at the world, ready to throw myself off into the streets of Los Angeles below. And then I took a moment to look at the glowing lights around me, the pulsating veins of the city, and I realized what a stupid decision I was about to make. The sense of life and possibility bustling around me in that moment overwhelmed me, and I dealt with it the only way I knew how - creating art. I took a photograph of the view. And that gave me the willpower to step off the edge and keep moving forward with my life.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Annie Leibovitz is one of my biggest inspirations. She has built a rock-solid name and reputation based solely on her art and hard work - and that’s a big goal in my own life. Yves Saint Laurent, the late French fashion designer, is another of my inspirations - he is my favorite fashion icon, and I admire his journey as both an artist and a human being trying to find his place in this vast world we live in.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I was too nice. People saw that and took advantage of me for my art. Since then, I’ve come to realize that there is value to my work - and that I need to be firm and rock-steady in everything I do.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Lots of big things in the works - you’ll certainly be seeing more of me in the future. My goal is to be able to chase my art wherever it takes me, and see the person I become in the long run.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Live in the moment. It took me too long to realize this, but it really does change your view on life for the better.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

I appreciate you reaching out, thank you very much for the interview! It was a joy to be able to share some of my thoughts with you. Much love from LA!
