Glenn Pritchard: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Me

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am Glenn Pritchard, a 24 year-old artist and photographer from Toronto. I like to chill with my girlfriend and our dog and our friends in various parks all over the city. I spend very little money other than camera gear, rent, beer, weed and cigarettes: the necessities. I’d rather be outside than in and although I can make a 4 leaf clover with my tongue.

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I am inspired by the everyday. Sometimes I see something/someone I want to capture in its/their reality. Sometimes I seem something/someone I want to capture but alter their naturally found state. Some of my stuff is highly constructed, some is completely natural, but either way I am inspired by walking around and looking. I do what I do because I walk around a lot and love to create images.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I sucked at drawing and painting and as a kid that is all I would do. I was finally given my first film camera, a Canon T-70 from my brother Jesse whom it was given to by my dad. After developing my first (completely shit, under and overexposed) roll, I was in love with photography.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Overcoming the price of digital camera gear is very tough. My loving and supportive parents bought me my first DSLR, a Nikon D5100 that has now been replaced. But I still use a lot of my digital gear that they bought me when I was younger (speed light, lenses, tripod, off camera trigger etc). So S/O to mom and dad!

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I guess my parents again. They are very happy with the life they live together, but growing up I was always told to follow my dreams as neither of them pursued what they really loved/went to school. My mom is near 65 and still tears up when she reminisces about her choice to move out and work at Towers rather than attend U of T. I was blessed to have been given their artistic nature and I guess the fact that they never pursued their passions is the reason I will never stop.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Lending camera gear. I learned to never lend camera gear. Also learned to store my bulk film in a fridge after ruining several rolls.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

No upcoming shows at the moment. I am currently working on a personal series entitled “Commuters” where I am exploring the ability of public transit to foster both connectivity and isolation. Also shooting random shit everyday.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Do you.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Listen. Write. Watch. Read.
