Emilie Wong: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Finding your true north, being boundless in your flight, and lifting off while exercising patience.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am a dreamer at heart but a realist at every roadblock. As an Aries, I am hot-headed and stubborn, but I also love to challenge the status quo and make the impossible become my greatest feat. Everything is a process and journey, rather than a rising and falling accomplishment.

Why do you do what you do?

To be blunt, I love being analytical but I actually hate numbers – I’m drawn to facts but only if they can convey a greater philosophical message and insight. Drawing and design allows me to open up channels, verbal and spatial concepts that engage this in myself and in others that look beyond the surface representation.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I’ve always been into the fine arts as a child – painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery – I’ve dabbled in many creative forms but never made it a part of my income/career. The last program I graduated from was related to digital media, so I worked in that industry shortly enough to realize there was way too much competition and too much unused talent.

Somehow, I managed to amalgamate both the traditional and digital aspects of art into an entrepreneurial role where marketing and small business financing became self-taught and is still being improved on to this day.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Swallowing my pride, deflating my ego, and letting the initial naysayers (i.e. my last manager) tell me I was in way over my head when I proposed the idea of starting my own apparel line.

Reading, yoga/meditation, and also directing and styling my first creative photoshoot for my brand grounded me and made me grateful for friends and family that were supportive of the new idea.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

As much as they bog me down with concerns of financial security, my parents definitely are my main supporters to follow my dreams. I am inspired by a lot of my own friends who have launched their own businesses/side projects in their 20s, rallying up local and word of mouth support.

I have inspired many youth in the past few years in the various community arts organizations that I’ve worked at throughout the years that it’s okay to not have it all figured out and to stop the comparison between friends/colleagues.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

You never want to burn any bridges in any industry really – again, as an Aries, we like to walk away and dismiss negative situations that arise – we almost never return with a more than friendly approach to something that has hurt us. I think being mindful that it’s okay to make mistakes and understanding everyone you meet may or may not ever like you but you have to carry through anyhow. Everyone goes through their own mistakes and it’s not my job to tell people to avoid them at their own risk.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I am currently enrolled in a full-time bootcamp with the Toronto Fashion Incubator that includes three phases in hopes to establish a new accessory/jewellery collection for the fall that will include silk scarves and 3D-printed charms.

I hope to travel more in 2016 (Bali, Whistler, L.A., among others) , gathering thoughts, adventures, style trends, raw materials – I want to be a complete sponge to new walks of life.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Practice patience and gratitude – North Americans probably don’t acknowledge or express it when given the full opportunity. Whatever your journey may be, forever be humble, and be mindful of everyone that steps in your path to either guide you, help you grow, or show you what you absolutely don’t need to hinder your performance.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Life is not a competition about who you know and how privileged you may feel, but about the changes and sacrifices we make to develop long-lasting connections while establishing trust. I am fully supportive of altruistic collaboration with others but will try to educate those not to take the easy piggy-back ride.
