EMILIE DEBONVILLE: Profile + Interview

Article content

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

The must-have qualities to be a stylist!

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am an outgoing, dynamic, ambitious person. I am a real passionate!!

Why do you do what you do?

Because it represent everything I am and it correspond exactly to my lifestyle.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

Since a young age, I liked fashion and beauty. At 14th years old, I had to interview someone who was doing a job that interested me.  I chose my cousin, Karyne Debonville, she was a stylist for LOULOU magazine at this time. I did my interview, and it instantletly picked my curiosity. I assisted Karyne on a photoshoot, and right away I fell in love with the job !

I started assiting Karyne more often, and I knew it was the industry I  will work in.

In 2007, I entered Marie-Victorin college in Fashion Marketing.  I graduated in 2010, same year that I started my own business in styling.

Trough the years, I worked in clothing stores, styling agency, on fashion shows and fashion events.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

It will never be easy to be freelance! It is my reality!

There is a lot of competition and there is less and less contracts, so it is like a jungle of ego and power. You need to stay true and be confident.

The reality of being self-employed, so having no clue if you will have work the next week or even the next day, is really stressful. The thing to do is to work like crazy whenever you can to fill the period when you do not have any contracts.

My cousin still gives me a lot of advises about the industry and life in general, and I am so grateful for that.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

For sure my cousin Karyne is one if it is not my biggest inspiration in styling. She is an excellent teacher!

My friends and family are really supportive. They are always there to cheer me up!

My mom, Joelle, is a self-employed Interior Designer. She is inspiring me as much in my career than in my life.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Once I accepted to many contracts at the same time. It was not possible to do all of them in a 24 hours day. At the end I was stuck in time and the quality of my work suffers. I was feeling really bad about it. I promised to myself that it would not happen again. I can say no, if I am feeling that it is too much.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Moving to NYC!!!

Mostly, I want to be a fashion reference in the industry.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

To be a stylist you must be PASSIONATE because it’s a lot of work, unstable and ruthless.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

-Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life –Confusius
