Elsa Ebada: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

silly

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

A number of alternating characters, that’s why this question is impossible to answer. For the most

part good i think.

Why do you do what you do?

Because i feel as if i have to. I’m not happy with the way this thing is perceived. its one of those things that has the potential to be profound but its more often then not just falls short and the general public never see it for what it could be. Also i'm very good at it. That's a good enough reason i think

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

It didn’t happen in a moment it was very gradual actually, there were a lot of steps. It had to be in steps considering where I'm from and the culture i was raised in, its kind of a big jump from the norm. I do remember being very young (in the 90s) and wondering on a super avant garde fashion show on Egyptian television. It was very bizarre and i remember being just super confused, i guess that’s how it started.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

I think the toughest thing (still is) to do is to visualize a complex or intricate form in your mind before you try to do it. How every little thing fits and attaches together Basically all spacial relations stuff, its tricky at first. Meditation helped

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Um yeah there's a few people, most of them are in other fields like Frank Frazetta. His a fantasy and sci-fi illustrator who lost the ability to draw with his right hand and learnt to paint and draw with his left, that’s pretty inspiring. In terms of designers i got to meet one of my heroes. A designer by the name of Koos Van Den Akker in new york who is truly one of a kind, an incredible person, and as much of an artist as he is a designer

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Thinking that i have to do everything on my own but the opposite has also been a mistake where i wanted to make a team right away that essentially wasn’t fully committed and ended up backing out which created some self doubt for a good week or two. Some things are good to do together for a common purpose like a community, and other things there is no way to do but on your own. There's no easy way to learn which is which.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’m currently setting up the team and the foundation for the INDIE 2 clothing design show in early november. Its gonna be a two night event where a hand full of designers each night get to showcase their collections and discuss it with the audience. It was a blast last year and Its gearing up to be an even better show this time around. I’m gonna try to keep improving on the show, grow it, and multiply it till it gives the design community what they want out of it. And hopefully in a few years the show wont need me and it can just run on its own. I really do think it's a very special thing which ought to be nourished.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Be honest with yourself and face harsh reality whenever you can. The trick is to be proactive about your issues when they come up. If you can keep going and strengthen your resolve then you'll be better from it all the while building some serious character. Besides optimism really is a useless trait. Just a self-indulgent self esteem thing.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

There are better aspirations in life then money and fame. Its very possible that you wont get what you deserve. Very talented people work hard their entire life without anything to show for it. Doing it even just for the fuck of it is a more commendable cause. speaking of last words, nobody has ever been on their death bed and used their dying breath to say “i wish i had more shit”.
