Dylan York: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Being from the South I think about all the tough-as-nails people that pushed for a better America.  Martin Luther King Jr, my grandmother Ethel, Hunter S. Thompson.  Righteous outlaws who didn’t ask for a thing but took all they could get.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

The South’s biggest swindler and scam artist.

Why do you do what you do?

I’m good at it.  I love people.  I’m a humanist and I have faith in humanity the same way Christ had faith in humanity.  I love capturing people at their best, I want to give people something they can love about themselves.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I really just fell into this.  I used to get drunk and shoot my friends’ parties and shows and now I get drunk and shoot my friends’ parties and shows and they pay me for it.  I’m a capitalist pig.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

I’ve had a lot of help along the way, from people recommending me and giving me advice.  I’m all self taught but I strive to humble myself every single day…when you do that you listen and you learn from every person and every experience you have.  So many things in life can be applied to photography…or anything.  The important thing is to stay humble and listen…always listen. And give thanks.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My grandmother, Ethel, was the kind of woman that would break your jaw if you crossed her.  Something I’ve learned in life is that the people who made a difference didn’t ask permission, they stepped up and demanded what they thought was right.  She raised 5 kids in the hills of Tennessee that all went on to own their own businesses.  She was a true hardass, I have her name tattooed on my arm to remind me where I come from every single day.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I’ve made a shit ton of mistakes.  I’ve pissed away a lot of time drunk and angry…I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being drunk or angry, just don’t waste time. Time is the most valuable thing we have.  Do something while you’re drunk or angry, do something righteous.  Also, never ever fall in love with a fashion model.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’m moving more into commercial photography.  I’m growing up and my photography is, too.  More editorial, fashion forward, clean, well done.  Architectural photography is a goal…the South has some disturbingly beautiful places.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Punch life in the face every single day.  Go hard, let this life make you tougher.  Go to bed every night bruised and beaten, but never ever let it break you.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

If you don’t think that life is beautiful then fuck you.
