DJ ACRO: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

I draw inspiration from almost any and everything, passion needs to be followed and fed, and strength comes from within.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I’m someone who loves life and everything about it, the ups, the downs, people, places and things

Why do you do what you do?

I love watching people let loose and enjoy themselves to the music that I love the most.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I have always been fascinated with Hip Hop and Hip Hop culture. Historically, the DJ has always been the backbone to the music so I was drawn to that. The second I got on a set of turntables and felt the vinyl under my fingertips, I was immediately hooked, and knew “this is me”. I’ve been DJ’ing ever since.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing I had to overcome to do what I do was to stick with it over the years and never give up. As busy and in demand that I am at this time, I could just as easily be completely non-existent in the game had I quit.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

When I first started DJ’ng, I would watch scratch videos and DMC battle tapes from A-TRAK, CRAZE, Mix Master Mike, and just be completely obsessed with learning how to do what they did. Those guys lit a fire under me to get into turntablism. As far as inspiring others, I have been running DJ workshops since 2004 in the Ottawa area. I’m always running into kids that I taught years later that are still doing their thing. It’s a great feeling.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I wish I started learning how to produce my own music much earlier! With technology the way it is today, DJ’s are not only killing it on the turntables, but are producing their own remixes and beats at an alarming rate, making their sets totally unique to anyone else’s. I have been working hard to try and catch up, but of course it takes a long time to master any art form, including production, mixing, and mastering.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Currently, I am gearing up and preparing to enter the 2014 RedBull Three3tyle World DJ Championships. After a humbling defeat in the Ottawa Regional last year, I am taking a whole new approach, so watch out for some heat! I am also working on my second full length studio mix that will be released sometime this summer. Stay tuned for that. Other than that you can catch me every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at The Standard Luxury Tavern at 360 Elgin Street. I am also opening the Slum Village and Pharcyde show at Ritual Nightclub on Thursday May 1. I’m totally excited for that one as those are two of my favorite Hip Hop groups of all time. Shout out to Mikey from Kapacity Entertainment on the booking!

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

For all you DJ’s out there, if you want it, go after it. Don’t let anyone or anything get in your way. Stick with it and work hard and the doors will open for you.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

I want to give a big shout out to my sponsors for always supporting me and keeping me looking fresh. Eric and Corey at Top Of The World, Thomas over at NIXON and Cal and Pete at Raised by Wolves. Also, keep an eye out for some DJ ACRO merchandise coming soon from good friend Paul at SKOSER CLOTHING. SALUTE FELLAS.
