Dianh: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Some kind of energy drink.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am and try to remain very much myself.

Why do you do what you do?

Because it is my favourite thing to do.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I think I always loved music best. But it wasn't until I started writing and recording songs that I got the dangerous idea that I might try to make a career of it. I took a couple of sound school courses and started working with Logic Pro and suddenly it seemed like a whole world of sound was open to me. Since then my toolbox has grown a bit, but my initial awe and making something from nothing remains.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

I am in the thick of it at the moment so I would ask you to check back in in ten years and perhaps I will have a helpful answer.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I continue to be inspired by the work of smart and talented artists, activists, academics and workers - those who are brave and do important work even though it is hard. Most recently I listened to a podcast of a speech made in Winnipeg by Vandana Shiva...Man is she ever smart and inspiring. And last night I saw Tanya Tagaq perform for an hour without a rest and it was totally and completely mind-blowing.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Ha ha. I have made so many mistakes that I may one day put them in a book so that others can avoid making them all over again. There isn't any school for building a career as a songwriter, and so you have to learn as you go. Sometimes that is a really interesting process and sometimes it feels like many sequential slaps to the face.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I am working on material for a sort of trip hop album, an album of songs for ukulele, and for an album to record in an old barn with a band. I am not nearly as prolific as that makes me sound, but my preference is to have a few ideas on the go at once. That way when you hit a wall with one you can take a break and work on something totally different.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Eat real food. Shop at farmers' markets. Read books. Get around by bike.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Thanks very much for reading!
