DFMC: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Music.  It has the power to actually do all those things and more.  It connects with something deeper.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

The one thing that anyone can figure out, passionate.  We’re passionate about our music, about our musical career.  That’s the one thing that probably defines us right now.  Ultimately, who we are depends on who’s asking.  Though if it were from a total strangers perspective, someone who doesn’t know our individual strengths and flaws, it would be passionate, that is what and who we are right now.

Why do you do what you do?

Music has the ability to do so many things and to make people feel so many different ways.  We do what we do because we want to be able to share that passion and those feelings with as many people as we can.  We do it because in our current world, we need to be distracted from the negativity.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

D:  That’s a really good question.  There were a lot of factors.  Growing up, I was always more tuned in to my artistic side.  I listened to so many different genres of music.  My parents are really open minded about their music.  But the defining moment for me was when I had discovered trance, more specifically Markus Schulz and John “00” Flemming.  Those are two artists who I really read up on.  It made me realize that I had a lot in common with them and that I also wanted to express myself musically, to be able to take people on a journey.  So I did.  And here we are.

M: I discovered house music in my high school years, it didn’t really connect with me back then, I was into Hip Hop.  Then when I got older I went to Sotto in Ottawa.  That’s actually where we’ve held a constant residency pretty much since the start.  What I saw there was nothing short of inspiring.  So many different people from different backgrounds just having fun and house music was the one constant thing binding them all together.  It had so much influence on everyone and it just clicked in my head that that’s what I wanted to do.  Connect people together through music.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

D:  Toughest thing, and still the toughest, is getting yourself out there.  You might think, and you might have for that matter, the best tracks ever on your computer or you might be the best DJ, but if you don’t have the appropriate exposure or contacts, it won’t go anywhere.  It takes patience, it takes time, but in the end it kind of builds you up to be really strong and dedicated to your craft.

M: To learn everything from scratch was probably the hardest, especially when you are learning to produce!  It was basically us in front of Youtube on one screen learning something, and us trying it out on the other screen.  The one thing that got us through those stages was practice, practice and practice.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

We pretty much both agree.  Our good friend and mentor Etienne Ozborne has inspired and also really supported us from the start.  He really has been nothing short of amazing for us and we owe him a lot!  Have we inspired anyone?  Possibly, if so, we are grateful to those that do look up to us!

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

We’ve made the mistake of waiting for things to happen.  You can wait, because good things do come to those who wait.  But while you wait you still have to be working your ass off.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

D: As you know, the year is coming to an end, but that only means that we have to be focused on the next.  We do have a lot of things coming up.  We’re super busy right now in the studio and at home working on a lot of different things.  New records, new concepts, new branding on some different things.

M:  We also have a new podcast coming in January.  It’s going to be amazing, we’re actually still looking for a name, but it’s going to reflect our new sound that we’ve been playing and working on.  Dirtier, in your face, up front house music is a way to describe it.

D:  Also, we’re in the works for some pretty cool gigs.  We are waiting for some confirmations and we can’t wait to announce it.

M: If you’re going to Miami Music Week don’t be shy to get in touch, we’re going to be there to enjoy the sun, the music and to work and promote our music!

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

D: Perseverance, dedication, discipline and motivation.  I know I’m still working on some of these, but I know they are key factors that are not only useful for what we do, but to get ahead.

M: Never be discouraged when it doesn’t work out.  Try and try again as they say!

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)
