Connor Seidel: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Essential, important, hard work, enjoying what you do

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am a young producer and mixing engineer from Montreal Quebec. I grew up in the suburbs of MTL and started building a studio and a network of inspired musicians, photographers, videographers and anyone passionate at age 15. Since then, I have been working with as much music as I can, writing and producing artists that come to my studio. I recently was offered a position at LeLab Mastering and have a dream of travelling the world while making music.

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because it’s all I know, all I breathe and care about and always have. I love working with inspired people every day, it drives me to work harder and improve and it’s honestly just a blast. Seeing people’s music and dreams come to life is so empowering. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else!

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

There was never a conscious choice that led me on this path, it pretty much developed itself. Making music for just myself eventually lead to working with close friends and then the network expanded more and more until I realized that this was a full fledged career.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing to overcome is the never ending climb upwards. There’s always people better and more versed than you and I like to take inspiration from them and use them as mentors. With every project I force myself to try new things, to find better ways of doing things but sometimes it can be very challenging. Sometimes you just hit a zone that’s really tough to deal with because you don’t feel like you’re improving. Taking breaks can always clear my head though and set me on the right path again.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

When I was 16, I was lucky to get an internship at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo Texas. It’s a 5 studio compound with some of the greatest engineers and producers. The artists that work there are the real deal. Seeing these top guys do what they do, and love what they do was such an amazing experience. It’s a tough lifestyle but I knew coming out of that experience that it was for me. I’m not sure if I have ever inspired someone directly, but I hope that all the artists that I make music with feel like there’s a mutual inspiration when we’re at my studio. Studio magic really does exist and I love the moments during a session where everybody’s head turns and you know you might have just found the glue for the song.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

One mistake I have made and I know I will continue to make is that I tend to invest myself into a lot of things at once. I absolutely love being involved with different projects, it keeps the ideas fresh and allows you to cross-reference and bring new ideas to different people. Sometimes it can get a little hectic and be tough to juggle….I’m working on it!!

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’m currently working on a ton of cool albums that I really hope to see come to life in their own avenues. I would love to see some of my artists hit some big Canadian festivals this summer. I am also currently working on some connections with a few really interesting musical products that I hope will make a nice addition to the Evermoor Audio team.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Do what you love! Sometimes it can be really hard and sometimes it’s the greatest thing in the world, just keep at it. I have no idea where I’ll end up in 5 years but I know I’m really enjoying my life right now.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

I don’t think school is for everyone. I love learning and that’s why I plan on taking 1 or 2 courses per semester, but I don’t think it’s always necessary to have an educational degree depending on what you do.
