Charlie Darker: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Struggle, Reward, Differentiation

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am Charlie Darker, a music producer determined to do something

different without being self indulgent. The goal is always to connect

with people while still connecting with yourself.

Why do you do what you do?

Sometimes I’m not sure. In terms of dance music specifically I am

less sure everyday that it’s something I want to be a part of.

However, that is only a small part of both what I do in the studio and

what I see for my future.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

haha, I’m still not sure where I want to be or what I want to do in

the music industry. I guess I was put on this path originally when I

started playing drums in middle school. Then I progressed to other

instruments and developed as a songwriter, eventually producing my

own music. Then one day a promoter asked me to DJ and I just

winged it.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

I think I had it pretty easy in comparison to a lot of guys. I only

recently turned 22, and I feel like I’ve done so much. I know guys

who are way older than me still grinding it out. I was lucky to be

supported by a lot of big names pretty early on, which helped alot.

Specifically I would have to shout out Wolfgang Gartner, JFK

(MSTRKRFT), Madeon, Hardwell, Porter Robinson, and about 50

other guys that helped me along the way. I think my biggest

obstacles are ahead, trying to make a unique sound in an utterly dull

sonic landscape and market.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Oh man, I’ve been inspired by so many people. There are

‘legends’ for me like Justice, MSTRKRFT, Wolf, and so many

Others . But I am also inspired on a more day to day basis by my

friends like Torro Torro, Autoerotique, Botnek, Snails, Aylen, Zeds

Dead, DallasK, Pierce Fulton, Popeska… the list goes on.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I think the biggest mistake I’ve made in the past is allowing myself

to be a cog in the ever growing machine that is dance music. By

that I mean accepting certain roles, certain norms, things that are

just ridiculous. This industry is such a circus, and you really need to

keep your head above water to stay true to both your artistic

integrity and your personal integrity. I’ve realized it’s so important

to self evaluate on what you are doing, and who you are working

with . It’s easy to get caught up in the rearview mirror of someone

else's path that you want to emulate. Basically I have learned that

any path that has been travelled before isn’t going to work again. At

least for where I’m trying to go…

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I have a new 3 track EP, a few singles. I really can’t say much about

them yet. You can expect a new sound, but I think people will still

recognize it as “Charlie Darker”.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

If you’re just starting out as a DJ right now without any production

knowledge…. just don’t. I honestly think there’s a better chance

you will discover time travel haha. !

Of course thats a jaded opinion, and I really only mean it to apply to

“EDM”. I can’t wait for what the next generation of young

producers come up with.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)
