Charles McDonald: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Through my personal experiences it’s when you forget all negative aspects about anything and you can visualize exactly what you’re aiming to achieve, like nothing can stop you in order to get there. It’s like a connection between your mind and your heart that unites in order to allow you to love doing what you do.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I’m the Catman! People have taken up that nickname for me because they know of my love for cats, I used to post funny video’s or pictures as I saw them and it kind of got out of control for people’s love of that so now I just embrace it because it’s just so funny and silly.

Why do you do what you do?

Because I simply love the interaction I get between my music and the people who enjoy listening to it. I don’t do it to look cool, feel good, not for money nor for Facebook likes and soundcloud plays, I do it because it represents my love for music and my podcast allows me to express that in a 1-2 hour mix, with all the new music I find that I wouldn’t necessarily be able to play in a club all the time, especially in Ottawa.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I went to my first Balenblanc in 2009 (16th edition) and I remember seeing DJ’s such as Markus Schulz, Above & Beyond, Deadmau5, Armin van Buuren, etc and I had no clue who these people were or what the music was and I was instantly hooked. A couple of months later I bought my first DJ controller and it’s been non stop ever since, I started practicing and experimenting up to the point where I had a specific style nailed down and I just needed to master it. I decided to start my podcast called #InSession because I was getting so much new music and nowhere to play it, thus I decided to take my favorites each week and record them together. 154 week’s later I haven’t missed a week yet.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Probably had to have been establishing myself in Ottawa. We have had a lot of great talent here and it’s been really competitive but when Bydek approached me in 2012 about doing an opening gig for Dash Berlin at Sotto, I became absolutely ecstatic! Ever since then I’ve slowly built up a resume of International DJ’s I’ve had the chance to open for and meet.

Now because my genre is mostly adapted to Trance and Progressive, I made the move by joining OTS Productions in November 2012 specifically to be able to establish myself as a trance specific DJ. With the help of my good friend Kyle Landry all of that has been possible and beyond what I could have asked to this point.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I can’t say that I’ve been directly inspired by anyone specific just because I look at myself as a unique situation, everyone has their struggles and inspirations so it would be hard for me to say exactly.

Being an inspiration myself, I don’t have any names specifically but I do know from going to shows and strangers approaching me in awe that I have set sort of an example for up and coming guys who might use my history and achievements as inspiration for themselves to do better and accomplish more. To strive to make it big one day.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

It was during 2012, I was djing a patio party along with some others during the official opening for that summer, I showed up with an unprepared track list of songs and no clue as to what the crowd would be looking for, I was also inexperienced on CDJ’s at the time. I was supposed to play first as people were walking in but I ended up going on at peak hour, got really nervous and pretty much embarrassed myself for the majority of my set, which lasted a short 45 minutes. I promised myself to never show up to another gig unprepared again, I still use that memory as a reminder for each show I play now.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

My goal ultimately would be to play at the legendary CIRCUS afterhours in Montreal. I’m a huge fan of that club and I really think I have a hidden style that would suit it perfectly, one that I can’t play in Ottawa because people wouldn’t enjoy it as much as the matured crowd in Montreal.

I would hope one day to start producing my own tracks but I have very little time to get that started. Lot’s of song idea’s tucked into my head.

Since becoming co-owner of OTS Productions we have been working on ways to expand the scene in Ottawa, unfortunately can’t really go into detail but they could essentially change the trance scene in Ottawa for the best.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Don’t ever let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do, always believe in what you are doing and do it for yourself, not because someone told you to do it. Many times people have tried and still try to tell me about my business and how I should do things, often time’s I listen to what they have to say but rarely take it into account because it didn’t follow up on what I believed.

If anyone tells you you’re going to fail, well it’s your job to show that person wrong J! Because it feels that much better when you prove them wrong.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)
