Blanc De Noir Designers: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Miah: Cheesy motivational posters…Hang in there, Kitty!

Gonzalo: Hard work.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

Miah: I’m just a guy from a small town trying to do what I love.

Gonzalo: I can only answer that wearing a mask

Why do you do what you do?

Miah: I tried working other jobs and it broke my heart. I had to be creative and work at what I loved to do.

Gonzalo: This is the only thing I’m good at

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

Miah: I worked a shitty call-centre job after high school. I hated sitting on the phone so I decided to move to Toronto and go to school for furniture design. Then I started to make leather bags and people started to buy them. So I changed schools to take Fashion Business at George Brown to learn all about the fashion industry.
A mutual friend introduced us in 2010 and we saw that a lot of our designs were very similar, so we decided to work together on a project and Blanc de Noir was born.

Gonzalo: I went to school for this for 10 years. I’m just trying to make my money back!

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Miah: Working shitty jobs just to be able to keep working at our passion.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Gonzalo: my grandmother

Miah: When I was in school I met so many wonderful teachers who helped me realize that I was on the right path to do what I wanted to do.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

We both worked solo on personal businesses for about 8 years. We both agree that working together in a partnership is so much better. We have gotten so much further in 18 months than we ever did individually in 8 years.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Currently we are working on our If The She Fits Kickstarter campaign. We are trying to raise $15000 to fund the production of 3 pairs of our gender-neutral shoes. We are also going to Lima Peru to create our next collection.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Miah: whoever has the most fun wins!

Gonzalo: good has but one style, evil has 1000
