Anya Mielniczek: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

focus, drive, determination

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am || passionate about the environment, a deep thinker and forever a teenager...currently -- working on my self discipline and recognizing adult life responsibilities, chaa

Why do you do what you do?

a bit of everything. I mix media, experiment, explore and play with cast off materials and garbage bits. I draw a lot of portraits, and work with environment themes that deal with the current state of our natural world.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

Summer after my 2nd year of university. It clicked one night that I could and wanted to be an artist. I wanted to explore the feelings and images I expressed. Choosing this path is the only thing that felt right (besides being an environmental activist, working with animals or getting lost in nature forever... one day)

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Starting. Starting was the toughest, all the work/responsibility/focus I knew I had to stick too. When I initially graduated, I really chilled for a solid year --still did things here or there -- but in my mind I wasn’t ready, felt overwhelmed. It finally got to a point I became too frustrated with myself for not starting and escaping and then there was a shift.

Encouragement from friends, fans, or total strangers letting me know one way or another what my work meant to them, how it made them feel --letting me know I couldn’t stop and had to keep going.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Many people in different moments along the way, conversations where an exchange of words or ideas that took root and guided me to my next step. I think following my dreams would have been inevitable whatever they may have been or will continue to be--my personal happiness sits in doing things that I enjoy and I gotta honor that or I’ll shrivel up and sink. It’s hard to say --but it’s nice to think I’ve inspired people with my work, I hope so :)

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I think one mistake I continuously make is being really hard on myself or being my own worse critic. What I learn from this is that a) I gotta chill and b) i gotta give myself more credit  c) cause, it’s less stressful and more enjoyable that way ....and really who cares. have fun.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Couple group shows and things on the way! Looking to continuously be making work. Goals (so many goals) --get a solo show soon, exhibit overseas, see my work printed, collaborations, and street art --work outside, on public spaces. Be happy.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

you always have a choice

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Recycle yo, reuse n’ reduce xx.
