Anthony Villegas: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Inspiration: Mother

Passion: Education

Strength: Perseverance

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am who I want to be. Given my fortunate situation of working as what I love, I have the option to wake up every morning and dress myself according to how I feel. If I’m in a somber mood, I’ll wear all black. If I’m upbeat, I’ll wear tons of fun prints or colors. Who I am completely changes and that’s how it should be. Those I am close to know my personality to always stay the same, but my taste is always evolving.

Why do you do what you do?

Well, I am still in school, but I would love to start my own magazine. I launched my website with the intention of using it as such, but there’s just a need for more hands on deck. I have a clear vision of what I want to do and where I want to go, it’s just a matter of having the resources at my fingertips to do so. I’m almost there, though (at least for this point in my life).

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

When I started fashion blogging, the part I loved most was the thanks my readers gave me when I would clear something up for them. Same goes for today. Since I love the advice aspect of blogging, I want to dedicate an entire website to doing just that. Different voices & opinions collectively providing information on topics most people wouldn’t think to look into without a little extra help.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The toughest thing I’ve had to overcome is my own insecurity. Since I’ve always been a little poor in the self-image department, blogging for me has been both a personal and professional journey. I really love that I’ve come so far in terms of my comfort levels and how far I’m able to step outside my own box. Who I am now is not who I was one year ago. I’ve completely changed in a positive way and I have blogging to thank for it.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I’d have to say that a male inspiration for me in blogging is Adam Gallagher. I’ve been following him for about 5 years now and I can’t help but feel motivated to do as he has. Since he is from Riverside (an area similar to where I’m from), he reminds me that it’s possible to get into fashion coming from that sort of town. Similar to him, Julia Engel of the fashion & lifestyle blog ‘Gal Meets Glam’ is also an inspiration. She and I attended the same University at the same time (though she was a years above me) and she is also a reminder that location doesn’t determine success.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Mistakes I’ve made? That’s easy. Not engaging with other users soon enough. Before I got into blogging, I was into being ‘instafamous’. I set out to collect followers and an absurd number of people on my account, but never engaged. Looking back, I don’t know why I ever thought that would be fun in the first place. Anyway, now I engage and I see measurable results from doing so. Just wish I had started sooner!

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Right now I’m working on a style series with 2(X)IST and a few other brands. My biggest project that I’m waiting to see launch is my partnership with New Era x NFL. I’m going to be in their new Lookbook for the upcoming season, and I can’t wait until it hits the press.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Be yourself and don’t use others as a means of negative comparison. When you’re taking into consideration all the people out there looking to replicate the actions of another, you have to be one of the few to go against the grain. Don’t try and do what everyone else is doing because it’s working for him or her. What works now doesn’t necessarily mean it will always, or that it’s right for everyone. Find your own voice and method, and then lead your own path to success.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Be who you want to be, not who others think you should be.
