Andi Wardrop: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Drugs, Sex, Rock & Roll (in that order)

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am what surrounds me.

Why do you do what you do?

I think everyone is looking for a comfortable way to express what is inside. For me, it’s always been through the lens. I do it because I want people taking in my videos or pictures to ride that same feeling. Ultimately, it’s a way to connect and communicate.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I was about twelve. I took a picture of a cat on my dad’s Fuji FinePix and it got a lot of love on dpchallenge. I love photography; I hate cats.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Stepping back & revaluating every single day. One morning you wake up as a focused artist but an unfocused friend or girlfriend or daughter. Other days it’s vise-versa. I don’t believe it’s overcoming it, it’s figuring out where you stand as a creative human. Everyone is overcoming the struggle on a slightly different spectrum.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

People that I connect with on more than one level. Anyone I can learn from, they don’t have to be holding a camera to teach me things about what I do.

Yes I think I have.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

I’m making mistakes all the time; if I stopped making them I would stop learning. Competing – that’s a big one though, you can’t compete in art; I don’t think it’s meant to be won or lost.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

Projects: I want to have a vernissage (an exhibit). Not one where people stand around pretending to talk about pictures on a wall. I want a permanent space of rotating work & on opening night I want all the waiters dressed up as John Lennon serving mediocre German wine in chalices.

Goals: I won a public speaking competition in Grade 6 with a speech about Mount Everest mostly written by my older sister, Emma. I gave up public speaking after that, but I have always wanted to climb Everest with her & my dad.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

If you get the inside right, the outside usually falls into place. Start there.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

eat your veggies
