Alexia Breard-Anderson: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Creativity, drive and perseverance.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

An eternally curious human being.

Why do you do what you do?

To encourage, to inspire and to learn.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

Ever since I was six. I read a book about Edgar Degas’ “Little Dancer of Fourteen Years” and couldn’t decide whether I wanted to be the muse or the artist. So I’ll settle with both.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Leaving my friends and family in Buenos Aires to pursue school and a career would definitely be on top of the list. I miss them like crazy, but they’re there for me and that’s all I could need.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

My parents. They’re the strongest human beings I know. And I’m inspired every day by the people I meet and the conversations I have. I hope to one day do the same.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Not acting quickly enough in one case and acting too quickly in another. When opportunities present themselves, it’s up to no-one but you to take them… but at the same time, patience goes a long way. It’s about awareness and balance.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

My first group art exhibition is happening this Friday! I’ve put together work by twenty-three artists from nine different cities and it’ll be up on April 17th and April 18th at 416 Gallery. At the beginning of May I’ll be heading to Montréal to work for the third edition of MURAL, a public art festival I’ve been helping coordinate since its launch in 2013. I’ll be back in Toronto in July to work for BuskerFest and then back to school! I also have another exhibition in the works for October, so a lot of exciting projects coming up!

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Oof. I always ask this question when I’m interviewing artists and it’s so hard to try and merge all of their answers into one response. One definitely stands out, though, and that would be to be yourself. So many things can get in the way of that, but if you work hard and stay true to yourself, there’s no stopping what you can achieve.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Un beso enorme para mi abuela Martha que no sabe leer ingles, y para toda mi familia en Buenos Aires, especialmente Mama y Marco. Los quiero y extraño demasiado!
