Alex Dvorak: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

The keys to success in the arts. The qualities that drive us all.

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

I am a young artist who has no clue what he’s doing. And I kinda love it.

Why do you do what you do?

The human experience is nothing without art and performance. We can slave away to make money, but without culture, what is the reward?

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I’ve known I wanted to be in the arts since I was a kid. Growing up theatre and singing were two of the only things that I didn’t unleash my then uncontrollable rage against. As for photography, I remember always asking my dad if I could use his old Canon SLR. I guess he was my photographic inspiration in that sense.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

Honestly, as a kid I had a bunch of behavioral problems.  To the point where I couldn’t really function without constant supervision. With the help of my amazing mother and the arts as an outlet, I think I ended up turning out a lot better than anyone expected.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I don’t think any one person or thing inspired me directly. I do however think that the constant support and love of those around me inspires me now to continue working towards my dreams. As for if I have ever inspired anyone else, who knows. I have taught kids, done a few talks about what its like to be an actor, and just generally tried to offer advice to anyone who needs it.  I don’t know if I was an inspiration, but I will still always try to help anyone going into this crazy world of the arts.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Undervaluing my own skills.  I don’t pretend to think that I am the best photographer there ever was. But after the 5th person looked at me and said “That’s all you’re charging me?!?” I realized that it was more than just a hobby, and that the skills I have honed are worth something to other people.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I am trying to get some legs under my photography business this month.  I specialize in actors head shots and portraiture, and I would like to transition into doing it in a much more full time capacity.  I would also like to expand my work.  I have focused a lot on my head shot business, but have no done very much creative work. So essentially, a camera in my hand every day and a slew of different pictures to be taken!

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Any skill you ever develop has worth. Both to yourself and others. Don’t undervalue yourself. You matter.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Stop the bullshit. Just do it.
