Addy Chan: Interview

The first words that comes to your mind when you hear Inspiration, Passion, and Strength

Inspiration- Finally!

Passion- Pit

Strength- Family

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

Addy Chan. As far as I know, I am a human.

Why do you do what you do?

I have a lot of interests and am lucky enough to make a living of them. I need money to survive so I have to work, but thankfully I love my jobs. These roles all involve creativity, being my own boss,

being a leader, art, business and entertainment which I seem to

gravitate towards.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I never knew this is what I wanted to do! I just knew from a very

young age that the standard path was not one I could follow. I’ve

always longed for meaningful experiences and spending my life doing

something I hated was never a rational option. I’ve always loved

music and dance so my life was consumed by it. The more I worked

the more I became exposed to different opportunities. I got into

choreography because I was a dancer. I became a photography

producer by talking to a producer on set while I was a model for a

print campaign. I became a host for a documentary travel show

because I was asked to help with the casting. I became a casting

director because I was doing it already through my dance and

photography projects. When I was younger and thinking “what will I

do with my life?” the job titles I hold now were unknown to me; this

career was not one I envisioned as a goal to attain. I’ve always

wanted my job to be something I loved to do. My strategy was to do

just that, and if something else became of interest along the way then

I’d go for it. This sounds a lot more passive than it was, so trust and

believe I work my ass off and hustle like crazy. But that is the story

of how I ended up a Jill of all trades.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

The arts and entertainment industry is not for the faint of heart! It is

overall tough, but one singular moment that comes to mind was

telling my parents I wanted to drop out of school to be a dancer.

(Every asian parents dream!) I typed out a 3 page letter, read it to

them over dinner at Boston Pizza, ran out of the restaurant before they

could answer and drove away in tears. I got through it because I have

the most loving parents in the world who called me right away saying

“A, we will support you in whatever you choose.” And they have

ever since. The arts and entertainment world is not a meritocracy, it’s

full of injustice, and its a constant hustle and grind. I was raised to be

tough and it’s the Chan way of life to be a fighter! So despite the

artist life struggles, I’ve made it through due to the continued love and

support of my family.

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

I wish I had a sentimental life- altering- moment story where I met a

mystical unicorn who told me to follow my dreams... but I don’t. I’m

generally inspired by people who work hard and are successful,

creative, take risks and do good for others. Over the years I’ve had

some really nice people who either through email or a chat express

that I was some sort of inspiration to them. I will always cherish those moments.

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Yesterday I made the mistake of buying 6 cupcakes when I only

needed 2 but wanted 4, but 6 was the same price as 5. I learned that

amount of cupcakes is unnecessary. I’ve made tones of mistakes but

they were all necessary experiences to learn from. That’s how you

gain knowledge, get better and kick ass.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I’m currently on the choreography team for and dancing in a Disney

film being shot in Vancouver. Been on this for a month and a half and

still have another month to go! It’s been the best film and

choreographic project I’ve ever worked on, and I’m lucky enough to

create under the guidance of the legendary Kenny Ortega! After the

movie’s done, I’m taking a vacation somewhere sandy, sunny and

turning my brain off. Then back to Toronto to sleep in my own damn

bed! I’ve been living out of a suitcase and traveling for so long that

that’s all I really want. Non work related goals: drink more water,

learn to speak Spanish, become Penny board master.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Stop comparing down and hating on people. Compare up and strive

to be someone better. Make time for your family. Take responsibility

for your involvement in the destruction of our planet and try to

minimize your role. Read. Devote time and energy to improving

your real life and real relationships rather than to the branding of your

fabricated self through the narcissistic dimension of social media.

Stay curious, inquisitive and silly. Work hard. Stop complaining and

do something about it. Make time for nature. Be available to

adventure and explore the earth. Be the best you ever by continuing

to learn and evolve. Surround yourself with people who positively

affect your life. Say thank you.

Say anything you want, about anything (Last words)

Shout out to Babes n Gents for the interview!
