Abbie Smith: Interview

Who are you? (Answer how you interpret this question)

My name is Abbie Smith, 21, I am a free lance photographer and Co-Owner of streetwear brand, KXC. I am in house photographer for D.Copperfield, designer menswear store. My passions are designing, photographing, wake boarding and traveling. My dream would be to have my work published in a book and to stop factory farming, because that shit sucks.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do, and what events led you to choose it?

I have known I wanted to be a photographer since the age of about 15. I bought my first came at 16 and I’ve been progressing and trying to achieve my goal ever since.

Toughest thing you had to overcome to do what you do? And what/who helped you?

This would be the choice to have gone away for a year and do my Ski-Season or stay here and push myself as a photographer. I entered to become an ambassador for a ski company and got the position but turned it down as my career was just starting to take off. Its a decision I don’t regret but I am eager to do it one day!

Has anyone/anything ever inspired you to become who you are (to follow your dreams)? Have you ever inspired anyone directly?

Curtis Blair unknowingly pushed me to want to be a better photographer and be way more organised in my work. I worked as an assistant for him for a while, he is such a talented guy and really inspired me!

One mistake that you made in your journey? How have you learnt from them?

Working in a shitty, underpaid job for too long. Where you don’t get much respect from people. This made me quite sad for a while and I lost focus on making my dream of being a photographer happen. When I ditched that I’ve really pushed myself.

So basically don’t get stuck doing something you don’t want to do, and if you do then you should work even harder to.

Upcoming projects? Plans/goal? (about anything, if you have any)

I am currently working on a few things. The one I’m most excited about is my on going project, girls in streetwear.

I wanted to share the girls who are starting to make an impact on this industry. Im really looking for everyday people who want to be part of this project, but not necessarily models.

What advice would you give to other people? (Just about life in general - It could be about anything)

Find a hobby, I see so many people who don’t have enough drive. I think its really important to have something your passionate about and set yourself goals. This always makes me work harder.
